The Sustainability Specialist is the point person for collecting and sharing knowledge and data to reduce our carbon footprint by lowering energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency.  Implementing practices with focus on savings to the company and the environment is also an integral part of the role as well as minimizing environmental impacts along the supply chain . The Sustainability Specialist ensures ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements including the Conflict Minerals regulation (Dodd-Frank Act - Section 1502) in addition to our customer environmental standards and initiatives.  



As part of the overall company social responsibility program, steps need to be taken to enhance and extend sustainability throughout the company as well as within the supply chain. Our stakeholders expect us to formally maintain data that set targets and quantify our progress.  The following are some of the requirements:

  • Measurement of carbon footprint
  • Reduction of energy use. Suggestions of alternative energies and program that positively impact the environment and operations
  • Increase company-wide recycling efforts
  • Measurement of corporate scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG)
  • Measurement of water use from both owned and contracted facilities, as feasible
  • Work with internal departments including Design,  Sourcing to identify areas of improvement in the use of raw materials which are grown, extracted, or harvested following sustainable practices
  • Identify areas to reduce packaging components using raw materials made from recycled or forestry certified paper products
  • Measurement and documentation of our suppliers level of participation in sustainable practices
  • Completion of customer Sustainability Surveys and Scorecards as required
  • Collaborate with outside agencies and member associations which help guide our environmental policies and management
  • Identify or create new sustainability indicators and best practices
  • Provide monthly update reports to Management on Sustainability efforts
  • Present Sustainability progress, reports and plans to PEI’s Sustainability Committee on an annual basis
  • Corporate communications of best practices via PEI Green Newsletter on a bi-annual basis
  • Customer, licensor and vendor engagement
  • Adhere to customer environmental sustainability reporting requirements
  • Coordinate annual corporate Earth Day Events in all PEI offices to educate associates and spread awareness
  • Develop sustainability project goals, initiatives, or plans, working with other sustainability professionals
  • Attend industry related webinars, conferences and seminars to stay up-to-date with new developments in sustainability policies, practices and technology
  • Oversee PEI’s Conflict Minerals Compliance Program (CMCP) and ensure PEI complies with regulatory and customer requirements
  • Review and approve metal trim suppliers in PLM that are determined to be compliant with PEI’s CMCP
  • Maintain compliance approved metal trim supplier list up to date
  • Assist Legal team with reviewing annual Specialized Disclosure (SD) form and Conflict Minerals Report for accuracy prior to SEC filing by General Counsel
  • Complete customer Conflict Minerals Reporting Templates as required
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Excellent verbal and written Communication Skills
  • Knowledge of sustainability analysis, LCA, footprint measurement standards and protocols, data collection and management, and advanced analytics methods and tools
  • Provide training to associates and suppliers
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively in a diverse group
  • Bachelor Degree in, Environmental or Sustainability related degree
  • Passion for Sustainability and Environment
  • Self-Starter with strong information-seeking skills and a drive to make things happen
  • Knowledge or experience in apparel industry a plus
  • 1-3 years of recent related experience a MUST
