We are seeking a talented manager and leader with a proven track record of developing novel linker technology, particularly in the context of Antibody Drug conjugates (ADC) or Protein conjugation, in order to further advance Nektar’s polymer technology expertise in support of developing our pipeline.  The successful candidate will direct the activities of the linker chemistry group; selecting, developing, and evaluating personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function to achieve research goals.

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop strategies to ensure effective achievement of scientific objectives. Monitors and evaluates completion of tasks and projects. Makes final decision on administrative or operational matters related to linker technology development.
  • Facilitate the design of linkers and conjugates by interacting with other scientists regarding biochemical, molecular biochemical and pharmacological topics. Conduct and collaborate with others on the design, synthesis, purification and characterization of linkers and conjugates.
  • Oversee laboratory experimentation to define new chemical routes to target molecules, and develop scalable, cost effective processes. Participates in industrial route realization, including empirical route evaluation, process development, and technology transfer.
  • Write and review manuscripts for publication.
  • May develop budgets for capital expenditures and labor.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

A PhD in a scientific discipline and a minimum of 10 years experience in the pharmaceutical or other technology based product research is required. Post-doctoral work may serve as experience.  A minimum of 8 years previous management experience is required. Equivalent experience may be accepted. Exceptional non-PhDs with demonstrated capabilities and/or significant experience may also be considered.

  • The successful candidate must be willing and able to do the following:
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of managing and advancing both groups and projects in a technology based industry. Ideal candidate would have a track record of developing novel linkers, particularly with regards to Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs) or Protein conjugation.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate project leadership skills, understanding how to set expectations and negotiate proper milestones to track progress.
  • Demonstrate strong negotiation and influencing skills. Requires the ability to change the thinking of or gain acceptance of others in sensitive situations. Demonstrated ability to develop successful relationships with and influence customers, both internal and external.
  • Work with senior management.
  • Must be goal-oriented, quality-conscientious, and customer-focused.
  • Good laboratory compliance and safety practices are a must.


Performance of tasks essential to the job function may require the employee to work directly with, handle, or otherwise come into contact with chemicals or pharmaceutical agents.
