Brown and Caldwell has a great opportunity for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join our growing team!  In this role, one will be responsible to develop and manage safety aspects of large municipal water treatment system projects.   By developing, implementing and maintaining programs, the H&S Manager will help create and streamline the systems and procedures necessary to ensure the overall health and safety of employees and subcontractors.  The ideal candidate works well on both self-initiated projects and those driven by concerns and issues reported by co-workers. The ideal candidate also takes pride in his/her analytical abilities, organization skills and attention to detail. 

This position has the flexibility to based out of a company office location in different areas including in California, Phoenix, Denver, Seattle, and other regions.

Job Expectations:

  • Ensure compliance with Local, State and Federal health and safety regulations.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain H&S policies, plans, and procedures.

  • Interface with Local, State and Federal regulatory agencies on complex permitting, reporting and related issues.

  • Lead and document incident analyses to determine root cause(s), prevention and corrective measures.

  • Collaborate with Safety and Project Management Teams to develop Site-Specific Safety Plans and Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs) for submittals and project tasks.

  • Conduct trainings on various health and safety best practices and programs

  • Recommend changes in policies, procedures, work environment and equipment to prevent accidents and illnesses.

  • Maintain open lines of communication with Safety, Municipal practice leadership and staff, and Project Management Teams on project status and prepare reports as necessary.

  • Serve as primary contact for project site incident and injury notification, investigation, and follow-up.

  • Organize and maintain necessary project safety documentation.


Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of project or corporate safety management experience with an emphasis in safety program management

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering or equivalent is required or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification required; Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification strongly preferred

  • Superior knowledge of Fed OSHA/CAL-OSHA Standards

  • Knowledge of Local, State and Federal regulatory agencies and requirements

  • Training as a competent person for common construction hazards (excavations, fall protection, scaffolding, confined spaces, etc.)

  • Ability to work safely and perform physical aspects of working on construction sites (climbing ladders/stairs, lifting up to 40 pounds, walking on uneven terrain for required distances, wearing necessary PPE, etc.)

  • HAZWOPER 40-hour and 8-hour site supervisor training 

  • Experience at water and wastewater treatment facilities with emphasis in both municipal and industrial environments preferred

  • Exceptional presentation and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines

  • Well organized with meticulous attention to detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent Word, Excel, & PowerPoint skills
