Brown and Caldwell has a great opportunity for an experienced Construction Safety Officer to join our growing team!  In this role, one will be responsible to develop and manage safety aspects of large industrial and municipal water treatment system and infrastructure construction projects.

Our health and safety culture incorporates some elements of behavioral based safety while primarily focusing on culture based safety.  This position will be located in Atlanta, GA. This position may also require up to 80% travel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in Construction Team meetings and plan, implement, manage, and maintain comprehensive H&S programs at project site locations.

  • Provide Project Management Team and subcontractors with guidance on H&S requirements and confirm project site fulfills Company, industry, and regulatory guidelines and requirements.

  • Collaborate with Safety and Project Management Teams to develop Site-Specific Safety Plans and Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs) for submittals and project tasks.

  • Review subcontractor Safety Plans and JHAs for suitability and conformance to project safety expectations.

  • Develop and conduct site orientation and other training, lead health and safety meetings, audits, and inspections to evaluate safety performance of site personnel, including subcontractors.

  • Collaborate in developing and implementing traffic control plans as necessary for projects.

  • Maintain open lines of communication with Safety and Project Management Teams on project status and prepare reports as necessary.

  • Serve as primary contact for project site incident and injury notification, investigation, and follow-up.

  • Organize and maintain necessary project safety documentation.

Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years construction safety or 8 or more years construction superintendent/foreman experience on large projects

  • Strong understanding of construction hazards and safe work practices

  • Working knowledge of construction safety standards contained in 29 CFR 1926 and applicable sections of 29 CFR 1910

  • Ability to work safely and perform physical aspects of working on construction sites (climbing ladders/stairs, lifting up to 40 pounds, walking on uneven terrain for required distances, wearing necessary PPE, etc.)

  • Strong written/verbal communication skills and ability to formulate project H&S Plans and required reports

  • Ability to lead by example and motivate others to develop a strong safety culture on construction sites

  • Safety-related certification (CSP, CIH, CHST) or ability to obtain certification

  • 30-hour OSHA construction safety training or qualified as an OSHA outreach instructor

  • Serve as office leader for H&S by serving as a resource for “junior” H&S practitioners, participating as a presenter in local staff meetings to share lessons learned and vital information from a field perspective with cross-functional teams.Good presentation and training skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training and competencies for common construction hazards (excavations, fall protection, scaffolding, confined spaces, etc.)

  • Experience at water and wastewater treatment facilities with emphasis in both municipal and industrial environments

  • Experience implementing traffic control plans for infrastructure work

  • HAZWOPER 40-hour and 8-hour site supervisor training
