We have an exciting opportunity for an instrumentation and controls (I&C) engineer with experience in design and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) alternative delivery methods, control system equipment upgrades, control system construction and implementation, construction support, and new or retrofit I&C designs to join our growing team. Job Expectations:

For the right candidate, this position offers the opportunity for significant professional growth and the potential to collaborate with local and national teams. In this role, you will be the national I&C lead responsible for delivering I&C discipline work for our IPD projects.  In this role for IPD, your responsibilities will include designing and managing I&C projects, automation programming oversight, construction support, startup support services during construction, conducting control system startups for industrial and municipal projects, and collaborating with teams with the goal of proposal and scope/fee development for IPD projects. This candidate will have the opportunity to practice or develop the skills as a design engineer providing instrumentation and controls designs (specifications, wiring diagrams, and P&IDs). We are looking for candidates who have a proven track record of supporting proposals, developing and evaluating engineering estimates, managing I&C design support staff, managing construction support staff for I&C services, executing programming, testing, and starting up industrial control systems in the industrial and municipal sectors with emphasis on water/wastewater work. The role requires the ability to integrate and apply Brown and Caldwell’s service offerings and talent to help our clients solve their most challenging issues. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Serve as Project Manager, Task Manager, or perform as lead I&C discipline design person on projects as appropriate
  • Scope and budget projects, identify method of project execution and coordinate staff assignments
  • Successfully manage or execute projects on time and on budget using company systems and tools
  • Overseeing automation programming teams as well as providing mentorship for other I&C engineers and designers
  • Support client development teams by connecting key technical experts within the company in support of developing new business opportunities and responding to proposal requests
  • Collaborate with a national team of technical experts, technical sellers, and the national discipline lead for the Electrical and I&C group
  • Delivering the project, from budgeting through startup either directly (preferred) or at a very engaged level of oversight
  • Ensuring that IPD/BC quality procedures are systematically followed
  • Working with discipline leads to develop IPD specific design approaches and tools
  • Produce instrumentation and controls design drawings, plans and specifications for use by construction contractors in the water and wastewater industry, including P&IDs, written specifications and control strategies
  • Support programming, testing, and start-up of HMI and PLC based industrial control systems
  • Participate in business development teams by providing technical input into proposal preparation, and attending project team interviews.
  • Lead the development of automation programming for industrial projects for municipal, industrial, and federal clients
  • Developing control strategies that will be configured in the control system
  • Perform submittal reviews from contractors and other system integrator developed automation programming acting as owner’s advisor
  • Produce effective and accurate written documents, reports, and technical memorandums
  • Perform in technical role for value engineering and QA/QC or review of sub-consultant work    
  • Be self-motivated with an outgoing personality and excellent planning and communication skills

  • Successfully execute assigned tasks on time and on budget
  • Travel to client and other BC office locations as needed

Position Requirements:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, or other engineering degree relevant to process automation control system work
  • Licensed professional engineer or ability to become licensed within 1 year
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience as an as an I&C Engineer for industrial projects providing services for government, municipal, and/or industrial water and wastewater projects, or industrial private-sector clients such as pharmaceutical, chemical, food products, petrochemical, or pulp and paper industries
  • Experience with IPD (alternative delivery) projects such as Construction Manager at Risk, Design-Build, progressive Design-Build
  • Experience in industrial process automation systems design, Fieldbus technologies, instrumentation installation, cyber security, or network design is a plus.
  • Travel away from the home office is anticipated extended times given the nature of the responsibilities
  • Comfortable and effective with clients and contractors as direct interface
  • Proven record of working and maintaining relationships with existing clients and projects with the ability to deliver those projects successfully, profitably, and to the client’s satisfaction
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Able to multi-task, enthusiastic, self-motivated, and work independently with a willingness to learn
  • Candidate should be a self-starter, results-oriented and be able to work under tight and pressured deadlines
