Project Manager, Faith In Housing
LA Voice believes all people have power and a voice. Every day we amplify that power by uniting diverse faith voices and equipping grassroots leaders to organize their power for what their communities need and want, winning systems changes that improve the lives of all county residents. We are an interfaith, multi-racial, multi-lingual organization of 55 churches, synagogues, organizations, and mosques that represent more than 50,000 families in Los Angeles County. (See our Facebook page L.A. Voice or website www.lavoice.org).
Our diverse and experienced team works with communities across the county to create a Los Angeles with racial equity and abundant life for all.
LA Voice is a member of Faith in Action (formerly PICO National Network, www.faithinaction.org), the largest grassroots spiritual and congregational organizing network in the U.S. and a member of PICO California, an effective, highly respected grassroots organization playing a significant role to turn the tide toward inclusion and equity across the state.
LA Voice is seeking a full-time project manager to lead an innovative new project for our organization, Faith in Housing. The goal is to increase the total amount of affordable and supportive housing units in Los Angeles County by providing support in the form of information, partners, and decision making support to churches and other congregations who are exploring building affordable and/or supportive housing on their properties.
According to a recent report released by the Southern Coalition of Nonprofit Housing, Los Angeles County needs 568,255 more affordable rental homes to meet the needs of its lowest-income renters. Yet the traditional sources of financing for affordable housing are inadequate to meet our housing needs, making it extremely crucial that we find ways to increase development of new affordable housing units through other means.
As the county has turned attention to this crisis, many have identified a unique opportunity: churches and other houses of worship who have property and a desire to develop housing on their property. The opportunity could be of significant benefit for the congregations and the community by providing crucial new housing for our most vulnerable neighbors. Several Los Angeles area churches and synagogues have started to explore the opportunity, but the process can be intimidating—even before speaking with a developer, and the benefits and risks are not always clear. There is a need for an infrastructure that congregations could tap into in order to explore and pursue this opportunity before getting into the details of development plans and technical work, and LA Voice is stepping in to play that role in partnership with others. We are seeking a full-time staff person to reach out to congregations to determine interest in constructing housing on their property, usually in partnership with experienced housing developers.
The ideal candidate has a passion and track record of doing justice and supporting community leaders in building power as well as familiarity with congregational leadership structures and experience and training in community organizing. They are effective at navigating leadership spaces in multiple communities; have a track record of being well organized and persistent and supportive in follow up and communication; effective communication skills relevant to the communities we serve; some knowledge of housing development and experience working with developers; and comfort or fluency in multiple ethnic and religious communities. This is an amazing opportunity to be a part of a diverse and growing organization and team that is creating positive, systemic change in Los Angeles and California.
