General Statement of Duties:

Provides Psychiatric Services to adult behavioral health population.  Provides diagnosis and treatment of mental health/substance use & co-occurring disorders. Refers clients to appropriate medical and/ or clinical services.  Orders and interprets laboratory tests for screening and diagnosing.  Prescribes medication to clients.  Provides information, instruction, and counseling on health maintenance, health promotion, social problems, illness prevention, illness management, and medication use.   Participates in consultation and training activities with nursing staff and other clinical and administrative staff.

Specific Duties with qualitative and quantitative measures of performance:

  • Prescribes appropriate psychotropic medication to clients.
  • Instructs client in purpose, dose, schedule, possible side effects, adverse reactions, and interactions of medications.
  • Works a schedule as assigned by supervisor in accordance with client needs. 
  • Is ready to see clients promptly as scheduled 90% of the time (except in cases of excused absence, or unit emergencies).
  • Participates in client-centered treatment teams that may include nursing staff, clinical staff, case managers, and others as appropriate.
  • Provides documentation of medical direction and supervision, e.g., chart review, case review, and review of patient care outcomes as required by the Virginia Board of Nursing and Board of Medicine.
  • May review Tardive Dyskinesia screenings, and further evaluate/ treat if needed.
  • Provides clinical documentation and assures that all filing of clinical information and submission of billing information are done accurately and within the time frame required.
  • Participates in case staffings and unit meetings as needed
  • Makes appropriate and timely clinical & medical referrals.
  • Provides after hours on-call coverage as needed

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities required for the position

  • Advanced skill in psychiatric/mental health nursing.
  • Ability to accurately diagnosis and treat psychiatric/mental health, substance abuse, and physical disorders.
  • Knowledge of psychotropic medications and how to prescribe.
  • Ability to work with a multidisciplinary team for the coordination of client care.
  • Ability to maintain client records according to Quality Assurance standards.
  • Knowledge of detoxification protocols.
  • Skill in supervising nurses and other staff.
  • Knowledge of community medical resources

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Requirements:

Requires a Masters Degree in a nursing related field and a minimum of three (3) years experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing.

Possession of a valid license as a registered professional nurse, a nurse practitioner and a nurse practitioner with prescriptive authority issued by the State of Virginia; certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and possessing a DEA number.

Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.


All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Two to five years experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing.
Experience in psychotropic medication management and client care.
Experience with adults in an outpatient setting.
At least one year of supervisory experience.

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
