POSITION SUMMARY:

Casual position in Marathon County's Clerk of Courts Office.  Work schedule is based on jury trials held in Marathon County Courts.  

A bailiff's main role is to maintain order during courtroom proceedings. Judges depend on bailiffs to ensure that the public, jury, legal teams, witnesses and defendants proceed through trials and other court proceedings with the required decorum. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma and general understanding of court proceedings. Background in criminal justice system preferred.   Other combinations of education and work experience that provide the desired knowledge, skills and abilities may also be considered.  Flexible schedule required. 

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

As a bailiff, employees fulfill numerous important functions but primarily serve to enforce courtroom rules during trials and other proceedings. Job responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting the judge and jury throughout court proceedings.

  • Check in potential jurors upon entry into the courthouse.

  • Declaring the entry of the judge and calling witnesses into the courtroom.

  • Accompanying jurors outside the courtroom to prevent contact with the public.

  • Observe jurors for any needs during trial, hand out and collect notebooks, order lunch if needed.

  • Assisting jurors with their duties.

  • Set up and clean-up of jury room. 

  • Relaying messages from jurors to the court and their families.

  • Completing required paperwork and reports  May deliver verdict to the judge.

  • Collecting evidence from legal teams and the jury.

  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

  • Performs related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of general functions of the court system.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with the public, judges, attorneys, and court staff.

  • Ability to listen carefully and follow instructions or requests from the judge.

  • Ability to handle long days or possible weeks of jury trials.

  • Ability to multi-task.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

 

COMPENSATION:

$12.43 per hour.  No benefits are provided for this temporary/casual position.
