This IT Media and Communications Coordinator position will work closely with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and support the Department of Information Technology (IT) to do the following:

  • Develop/implement communication plans, public relations, marketing and media relations strategies and promotional materials for addressing complex technology issues and technology projects;

  • Work with controversial and confidential issues, situations and matters;

  • Promote programs/services/events and communicate with the public;

  • Develop positive working relationships with the news media, community leaders and citizen organizations;

  • Develop methods, programs, and opportunities to inform and involve  citizens; write news  releases, message points, annual reports, articles, advertising, how-to instructions; 

  • Create unique products for internal and external audiences;

  • Write and edit original ideas and assigned feature articles for distribution to local, regional and national newspapers, magazines and trade journals and internal newsletters and websites;

  • Create schedules and timelines for on-going media and communications material development;

  • Coordinate and manage special events;

  • Work during emergencies, disasters, and inclement weather on Alpha One status to provide accurate and timely information to the news media.

Minimum Requirements:

Min/Special Requirements: MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience equivalent to six (6) years in fields such as public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the Citys operational status.

Preferences:

Preferences: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including SharePoint
Experience in Internet/Web-based communications.
Accreditation by the Public Relations Society of America.
Knowledge or experience working in government at the local or state level desirable.
Knowledge and experience writing and developing press releases, annual reports, employee newsletters, award entries, team collaboration sites, user-based instructions guides, and video/multimedia products.
Experience in communicating technology capabilities/change.

VRS Contribution:  All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
