TNTP seeks summer Mentor Teachers for the RootsLA Teaching Pathway. This position is based in Los Angeles and is available in Summer 2019.

The RootsLA Teaching Pathway is a teaching fellowship which recruits and trains diverse college-aged Angelenos who want to return to their community to make a difference in the classroom. The fellowship will introduce college juniors from underrepresented backgrounds to teaching and the education reform movement, serving as an early pipeline to teach in L.A. schools after graduation.
RootsLA prepares Fellows to achieve immediate, measurable success with their students in the fall after they graduate from college. Our Pre-Service Training (PST) combines real practice with students in 1:1, small group, and whole group settings in the morning with intensive skill-building sessions in the afternoon. Fellows must demonstrate proficiency in core skills to successfully complete pre-service training and be recommended for a teaching position with a Roots LA charter partner school.
What You’ll Do
Mentor Teachers are experienced and successful teachers who develop Fellows towards mastery of essential skills that we believe Fellows must have to ensure a strong start to the school year as a new teacher. You will be the primary coach and source of support for Roots LA fellows as they learn essential teaching skills at a South Los Angeles charter school from June 17 – July 19, 2019.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Influence, coach, and motivate a group of 10-12 Fellows to reach ambitious performance expectations and student-learning goals by:
- Conducting observations and providing specific, actionable, on-the-spot feedback to individual Fellows at least twice per week on their teaching performance in a summer school classroom
- Planning regular opportunities for practice prior to instruction for immediate, low-stakes feedback,
- Executing daily coaching supports including co-planning, rehearsals, examining data or student work, or direct feedback conversations
- Co-facilitating skill building sessions, which support Fellows’ acquisition of techniques
- Evaluate Fellow performance by assessing Fellow proficiency, using data to identify trends in teacher performance and identifying the highest priority development areas on an individual and group level
- Promote analytical self-reflection in Fellows to accelerate growth and student achievement
- Meet with other PST team members to plan meaningful training activities and norm on Fellow performance standards

What You Bring
We are looking for the best teachers in charter schools across Los Angeles. We expect our Mentor Teachers to demonstrate a record of academic success working with diverse students, high expectations for all students and teachers, and strong organizational and communication skills. Our Mentor Teachers should be comfortable leading others and delivering feedback. You’ll be right at home here if you can cultivate strong relationships, and push yourself, your work and the people around you to the next level.
- Minimum 3-5-years of successful teaching experience in Middle or High school grades in Los Angeles (required)
- Strong familiarity and experience with the Common Core State Standards (required)
- Experience with Teach Like a Champion techniques (preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire students and adults
- Strong data indicative of consistent student growth and achievement
- Experience and comfort observing and providing direct feedback to teachers, both written and verbal, that leads to immediate teacher improvement
- Demonstrated ability to connect with adult learners quickly and to build strong working and mentoring relationships
- Exceptional skills in time management, including the ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Readiness to work non-standard hours over the course of the pre-service training (50+ hours per week)
- A positive outlook, flexibility, and sense of possibility in stressful situations
- Evidence of working successfully in teams or cooperative settings
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to utilize quantitative and qualitative analysis to support decision-making.
Mentor Teachers can expect up to 50 hours of training in advance of PST over multiple days between March and June. This will include three full-day trainings (on weekends, one in March, April, and May) and approximately 6-8 training phone calls on weekday afternoons. Mentor Teachers will also receive ongoing support throughout the summer training.
During the summer Pre-Service Training (June 17 – July 19, 2019), Mentor Teachers will work up to 40 hours per week. You will spend your day observing instruction, giving feedback, co-planning, or facilitating professional learning.
