TNTP seeks Evaluators based in the New York City area. This position is available starting December 17, 2018.

NYC Specialized Teacher Enhancement Pathway (NYC STEP) is a teacher preparation pathway run by the NYC Department of Education. In this program, experienced educators will participate in a training experience to gain the skills and knowledge to serve a specialized student population and potentially earn a certificate extension. For the 2018-19 school year, NYC STEP is designed to increase the number of qualified educators with the skills and competencies to support students in specialized populations, including secondary students (grades 7-12) with disabilities.

What You’ll Do

Evaluators are strong communicators who will observe and evaluate NYC STEP participating teachers. Evaluator duties and responsibilities include:

  • Communication and Implementation
    • Communicate regularly, openly and collaboratively with the program staff in a timely way about participant performance
    • Communicate and openly accept feedback from program staff about ways in which you are evaluating the teacher participant and supporting program goals
    • Collect data and participate in data analysis related to participant performance
  • Evaluating
    • Responsible for the formal evaluation of 6-12 program participants at four points throughout the school year
    • Visit schools throughout NYC to observe and evaluate participating teachers
    • Use the Danielson Framework for Teaching rubric to accurately evaluate participant performance
    • Communicate evaluation ratings and feedback to participants 
    • Submit evaluations using online platform in a timely manner

Evaluators have:

  • Teacher Skills
    • Possesses deep knowledge of student population specific instructional skills (Secondary Special Education)
    • Previous experience implementing a performance-based evaluation using a rubric
  • Evaluator/Leadership Skills:  
    • High-energy collaborator with the drive necessary to be a key player in launching a new program.
    • Holds high expectations for students and colleagues 
    • Models habits of continuous improvement by being open to feedback and continually improving own practice 
    • Possess strong organizational and time management skills 
    • Experience and comfort observing and providing direct feedback to adults, both written and verbal, that leads to immediate improvement
    • Comfort using a rubric to evaluate teacher performance
  • ​​​ Program Commitment:
    • Investment in the success of teacher participants to master new student population teaching skills and reach ambitious goals with students 

What We Offer 

Evaluators will be paid at an hourly rate of $30 per hour for all training, school-year norming calls, site-based check-in meetings, scheduling, and observations (classroom time, writing reports, etc.).  

Time Commitment 

Evaluators will be assigned a caseload of teachers (generally 6-12) with whom they must schedule observations during each round based on the teachers’ instructional schedules and the evaluator’s availability. While evaluators can expect to work ~10-20 hours per week during observation cycles, weekly working time will vary based on how the evaluator chooses to schedule his/her assigned observations.  Evaluators will not be expected to work more than 20 hours per week, and there will be several weeks without any observations between each round. 

Evaluations must successfully complete staff training in January 2019 and attend monthly Evaluator development sessions throughout the school year. More details about the structure and content of training will be shared later in the hiring process. Observations will be conducted in four distinct rounds from January through June.
