TNTP seeks a Senior Effectiveness Coach for the Academics Department on the Client Services Team. This position will be based in a home office in California, and is available immediately. Frequent travel up to 60% annually to Corning, California is expected.

TNTP is currently expanding our work into academic strategy to build stronger classrooms for more kids, faster.  While strong human capital policies and practices are necessary to build and maintain excellent schools, we know that in order to ensure students are really learning, districts must have a clear academic vision, the ability to translate that vision to schools, and, most importantly, know how to improve the quality of instruction offered to kids. TNTP is helping schools, districts and states to establish policies and practices that prioritize and support effective teaching, every day.  

What You’ll Do

The Senior Effectiveness Coach will partner primarily with the Corning Union Elementary School District to help new and experienced teachers improve their literacy instruction, and help leaders monitor performance of their instructional program through direct coaching. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Support the development and execution of approaches that will improve the quality of instruction at scale, particularly in early literacy (Grades K-5) 
  • Design and implement professional development for leaders and teachers around Common Core aligned reading and writing instruction
  • Provide regular coaching to teachers and leaders around literacy instruction that results in immediate, measurable improvement in student achievement
  • Regularly track, measure, and communicate teacher growth and development to district partners, school leaders, and other stakeholders 
  • Develop and manage client relationships with school leaders, teachers, and other stakeholders
  • Be a day-to-day resource to help Corning Union Elementary School District staff to provide guidance, troubleshoot hurdles, and adapt as needed.

We expect our Senior Effectiveness Coaches to:

  • Know great teaching and learning that prepares students for success in college and career when you see it. Whether you are watching how students engage during a lesson or looking at student performance data, you can identify whether students are grappling with the right content and diagnose what needs to happen to improve student learning outcomes immediately and in the long-term. You understand the implications of the shifts in instruction required by standards such as the Common Core for students, teachers, school leaders and district staff and how the different elements of the standards (the research, the shifts, the standards, math progressions, etc.) work together.
  • Develop teachers at varied points in their career. You track and analyze teacher data, but it’s what you do with it that really has an impact. Based on your data analysis and what you see in the classroom, you identify new approaches to improve performance of either new or experienced teachers under a quick timeline.
  • Motivate and influence education leaders.  You’ll regularly partner with, and be expected to influence, clients, teachers and school leaders, investing them in the vision for TNTP’s coaching model and generating excitement about innovative approaches to professional development. 
  • Be comfortable with the unknown. Ambiguity doesn’t scare you; just the opposite, you thrive on it. You will use your creative instincts, teacher performance data and anecdotal evidence from classroom observations to develop solutions with limited guidance and historical precedent in an ambiguous and fast-paced environment. 
  • Translate your academic expertise. We’re counting on your strong public facilitation skills, ability to assess and adjust to the learning needs of your audience and ability to clearly communicate complex information to a variety of audiences, including teachers, school leaders and district staff.  You have a vision for the sequence of learning that all stakeholders—district leaders, school leaders, teachers, etc—need in order to improve the academic experience of students.


  • Deep knowledge of literacy content and instruction, with at least four years PreK-8 teaching experience (required), preferably in high-need schools or with high-need populations, and a proven track record of raising student achievement
  • Specific expertise in the area of early literacy (preferred)
  • Previous experience with coaching and/or facilitating professional development for teachers (required)
  • Strong familiarity and experience with the Common Core State Standards (required)
  • Immediate understanding of what effective teaching looks like and a deep commitment to the importance of effective and rigorous instruction
  • Proven ability to overcome barriers and provide seamless service to clients and program stakeholders
  • Ability to track and analyze data on teacher and student performance to uncover trends and act strategically and effectively to improve results
  • Ability to communicate direct feedback in a compelling way that inspires teachers to make immediate improvements to instruction that will accelerate their students’ achievement

TNTP offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience in a similar position with the potential for an annual performance based bonus.
