USAID Burma Advancing Transition to Peaceful Democracy Through Participation of Civil Society and Media (CSM-II) 


Project Objective:   

Social Impact has been commissioned to conduct a mid-term evaluation for the Advancing Transition to Peaceful Democracy Through Participation of Civil Society and Media (CSM II). This evaluation will examine the overall performance of CSM II in relation to its purpose and outcomes; the effectiveness of Activity’s structure in the context of design versus implementation; and the extent of collaboration, learning and adaptability in response to the evolving political, social, and economic contexts in the country. The evaluation will include a desk review, primary data collection, and reporting from October to April 2020.  

Position Description:  

SI is seeking a multi-talented and energetic individual to serve as the interpreter and administrative assistant on a five-person research team. The team will include a Team Lead, two evaluation specialists, a gender and inclusion specialist, and an interpreter/administrative assistant. The Interpreter/Administrative Assistant will provide translation services of Burmese-English and provide logistical support. The person selected for this role would coordinate team travel, schedule interviews, and provide overall support for the evaluation, including providing local context and assisting in note-taking and other evaluation tasks. The Assistant will assist the team with the coordination of the on-the-ground logistics; however, whether the team will travel is still uncertain. The position is level of effort-based and will be approximately 15-20 days. The Interpreter/Administrative Assistant will report to the Social Impact Project Manager.  


  • Provide Burmese-English interpretation for SI employees and consultants in meetings with local relevant stakeholders, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews. 
  • Provide Burmese-English translation support to the team throughout the evaluation, with proven experience translating in evaluations and the subject technical area. 
  • Support preparation of a data collection plan, specifically assisting the team in planning the logistics for a detailed data collection schedule and translating data collection protocols into local languages, as needed.  
  • Prior to fieldwork, support preparation of fieldwork logistics, such as hotel, ground transportation, and arranging meetings, under direction from the Team Lead and Social Impact management team.  
  • During fieldwork, support key informant interviews (KIIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) with identified stakeholders in Sri Lanka, through either interpretation or notetaking, depending on the team’s needs.  
  • Other logistical/administrative tasks as assigned. 
  • Work closely with SI HQ team and communicate in a timely and effective manner with all project personnel.  


  • Fluency in English and Burmese. 
  • Excellent writing skills. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in degree in relevant field and at least three years of experience working within the Burmese context.  
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail  
  • Prior experience in logistics/coordination of teams or events.
