POSITION SUMMARY:

This position directly supports the Medical Examiner and Chief Deputy with death investigations to determine cause and manner of death, cremation authorizations, and performing other duties as assigned by the Medical Examiner and Chief Deputy.   

This is an on-call position working at least 64 hours per month with additional hours available. A flexible schedule is required as services are provided 24/7. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate's degree from an accredited college/university in a medical specialization (Nursing, Paramedic, or Physician’s Assistant), Forensic Science, or related field preferred. One year of medico-legal investigative experience or a minimum of three years emergency medical, nursing or related experience desired. Other combinations of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. Previous experience with death investigations or forensics desired. Certified by the American Board of Medico-legal Death Investigators (ABMDI) preferred and will be required within one year of hire. Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and a driving record that meets county standards.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

 

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Investigates deaths in accordance with Wisconsin State Statutes, including evaluating death scenes, examining and preserving evidence, investigating the circumstances of death by obtaining personal data and medical history through records and interviews; and establishes initial assessment of cause and manner of death.

  • Determines need for autopsy, toxicology, x-rays, etc.; involvement from other agencies/departments such as detectives, crime lab, District Attorney, pathologist, etc.; obtains appropriate records from law enforcement, health care establishments, etc. to coordinate a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary investigation.

  • Provide family and survivors support and answers questions to ensure understanding of death.

  • Prepares and maintains reports documenting the facts and findings of all death investigations and other activities pertinent to the investigation.

  • Determines positive identification of decedent.

  • Collects, maintains and disposes of evidence; obtains bodily specimens; maintains and sorts records and documents; maintains, sorts and reviews photographs.

  • Provides court testimony as needed.

  • Prepares and provides cremation authorizations.

  • Performs other functions as necessary under the directions of the Medical Examiner and Chief Deputy Medical Examiner.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of Wisconsin State Statutes concerning investigation of deaths that includes; laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.

  • Knowledge of investigation techniques, principles, and practices used in the determination of cause and manner of death, including autopsy procedures, necessary additional testing/examination, handling and maintaining evidence chain of custody, evidence collection and preservation, specimen collection and preservation, forensic photography, etc.

  • Ability to critically think and apply forensic and investigation techniques into practices.

  • Ability to secure facts through objective, independent, and thorough investigations to form general rules or conclusion (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events); identify and interpret evidence; analyze data; and make appropriate determinations.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology especially pertaining to death, disease processes, and varying forms of trauma.

  • Knowledge of occupational safety requirements and procedures, especially regarding hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and public relationships; and to communicate effectively and deal compassionately with grieving family members.

  • Ability to prepare, present and maintain accurate, objective and thorough reports and records.

  • Ability to utilize reference, descriptive, consulting, design and advisory data and information such as legal briefs, medical records, toxicology and autopsy reports, x-rays, police reports, professional literature, and medical reference texts, maps, state statutes, and death certificates to formulate accurate cause and manner of death.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with law enforcement officers, district attorney’s office, doctors, nurses, emergency medical personnel, funeral directors, deputy medical examiners and families of deceased, and maintain strong working relationships.

  • Ability to move and transfer human bodies of various weights and insuring preservation of any trace evidence.Tasks involve the ability to exert regular and sustained very heavy physical effort typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy objects and materials 100 pounds and occasionally heavier items over 100 pounds.

  • Ability to deal with death and dying on a daily basis, often in unpleasant circumstances.

  • Ability to work under unsafe and uncomfortable conditions in various types of terrain and weather conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature and noise extremes, traffic hazards, toxic agents/chemicals, or disease that can cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.

  • Skill to safely drive a vehicle in the regular performance of duties and transport decedents.

 

 

COMPENSATION:

Compensation for Deputy Medical Examiners:

$15 per hour for continuing education, transporting, staff meetings, training wage, etc.

$25 per hour for conducting a death investigation

$40 per cremation authorization

$2.25 per hour for on-call pay

**This on-call Deputy Medical Examiner position  (seasonal/temporary) is not eligible for other benefits. 

 

 

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

The selection of the successful candidate may be made by assessment of education and background, oral interview, review of references, written background assessment, extensive background investigation, and/or other job-related selection procedures.  The selected candidate may be required to satisfactorily complete a post-offer medical examination, psychological assessment, and drug screening.  OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE:  This classification may have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.  Refer to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department Exposure Control Plan for more specific information.
