Position:                           Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Position Mission:

The role of the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is to provide technical expertise or coordinate expertise from external sources to effectively complete the project requirements. 

The role also encompasses the supervision of junior or graduate engineers and may also require a Lead Engineer role on a project.    

The role extends to ensuring there is good communication and transfer of information between disciplines.

Position Objectives:

·                           Effective and timely completion of drawings through provision of design input.

·                           To ensure correctly specified equipment is sourced for projects and studies.

·                           To ensure the design meets the process, project and client’s requirements.

Direct Reports (Project Specific):         

·                           Mechanical / Piping Engineers (junior and graduate level).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Design Competence

·              Perform engineering design and calculation generation.


·              Compliance with applicable South Africa and Study / Project specific Codes and Standards.


·              Preparation and review of mechanical equipment specifications and data sheets.


·              Preparation of engineering lists (equipment / lubrication / spares / valves / pipeline / chutework / platework, etc.).

Design Drawings

·              Mechanical / Piping design and provision of information to draftsmen for the preparation of design drawings.


·              Review, evaluation and selection recommendations for mechanical equipment from vendor suppliers.


·              Review and make-up of vendor certified documentation (drawings, data sheets, manuals, lube lists, etc.) and responsibility for the implementation of engineering interface data onto the drawings via the draftsmen.

Management / Administration

·              Preparation of Study and EPCM documentation.


·              Assist in the preparation of manhour budgets and design schedules for Study / EPCM estimates.


·              Identify scope variations as they occur.  Prepare documentation and estimates for submission.

Design Management

Ensure compliance with Lycopodium ADP procedures, standards and polices.

Perform the role of Design Manager or Lead Engineer on projects and studies as required and as agreed with the Manager of Engineering.

Assist the Manager of Engineering in checking / identifying fatal flaws in design.

Overview (and participate in as required) Mechanical / Piping design for projects and studies.

Manage field engineering and commissioning activities, as


Field Engineering

·               Assist with field engineering and pre-commissioning activities.


·              Carry out shop and site inspections of plant and equipment.


·              Fault diagnosis and practical problem solving.


·              Prepare field trip reports.

Professional Development

Assist HOD with the professional development of graduate engineers through establishing appropriate internal training / development programmes and identifying / recommending relevant external programmes.

Authority Levels:

As specifically delegated by the Manager of Engineering from time to time.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • University Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equal.
  • More than 8 years post graduate experience.


  • Demonstrate an ability to perform allocated tasks, unsupervised, within agreed milestone dates and to a high standard of accuracy and professionalism.
  • Ability to manage small design / drafting teams and achieve budget manhours and milestone deliverable dates.
  • Demonstrate a high level of technical ability within the field of expertise.
  • Proficient computer skills with the Microsoft suite of software packages, including MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint and Projects.
  • Demonstrated skills with the use of specific proprietary software packages relevant to the Engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrate a good command of the English language and possess good report writing skills.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work efficiently in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and a practical approach to engineering problems.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continued professional development.
