Role Summary

The Solutions Engineering team is responsible for the design, development, deployment and third-line support of key elements of the Open™ media logistics and entertainment experience platform. This includes the integration architecture, the data and analytics infrastructure, and elements of the media management, workflow and metadata systems required to ingest, enrich and deliver content to Global Eagle partners. The primary focus for the team is on integration development, and Solution Developers ensure that systems integration is conducted in the most efficient way possible, emphasising the implementation of re-usable services, and using industry standard communication methods and data exchange formats.  Each developer is personally responsible for ensuring that solutions are documented appropriately and built to agreed standards, and that Global Eagle processes are followed regarding change control, deployment, testing and other fundamental IT disciplines. Solution developers will use a wide variety of tools to deliver Open™ including robotic process automation and scripting tools, as well as classic code development.

Solutions Developers carry out a variety of roles including detailed technical design, unit test design and implementation, coding, deployment of solutions into test and production environments, and the support of deployed solutions usually on AWS. Typical work will include working on our core integration platform, which is event-driven and based on AWS technologies such as Lambda, SNS, SQS and hooks into our SaaS partner applications such as Bebanjo and SDVI; supporting and helping to sunset our JBoss Fuse-based ESB; working on our metadata transformation and delivery platform; and working on utilities to support the daily work of our colleagues in Content Operations. Solutions Developers are self-starters and are able to work in a disciplined and professional manner in a rapidly evolving commercial environment. 

Key Responsibilities

  • To work with business analysts and business people directly to understand business requirements for the software being developed in order to ensure that solutions are fit for purpose and meet business needs in terms of function, performance and maintainability
  • To develop code, unit tests, deployment scripts, documentation and other artefacts necessary to deliver solutions as designed
  • In conjunction with other internal teams and external vendors, deploy solutions into test and then production following agreed processes for doing so
  • To work with the Director, Solutions Engineering in implementing coding, documentation and other process standards to be applied across Solutions Engineering, along with supporting tools
  • Work with external suppliers such as Contacta, AWS, SDVI, Rightsline, Meta, Bebanjo and others in order to resolve issues involving the integration platform and supporting services
  • Develop innovative solutions to business challenges, delivering the greatest value to the business; whether this is measured in terms of efficiency, commercial gain, or cost avoidance
  • Collaborate with peers in relevant teams to harness better ways of working  –  promote and display trust to build successful internal and external relationships
  • Manage time well and work calmly under pressure and establish a calm working atmosphere during high-pressure delivery and problem resolution activities
  • Question complexity and ensure that sensible delivery options are chosen

Qualifications/Experience

  • At least five years of hands-on practice in a software development organisation
  • Ideally experience in a media and entertainment environment such as broadcast or media supply chain
  • Demonstrable experience in successfully developing and deploying tested, performant software solutions
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence across all levels within and outside the organisation
  • Ability to establish and build cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts, of varying seniority 
  • Ability to manage a variety of work simultaneously and work well under pressure

Skills/Interests/Approach

  • Deep familiarity using IDEs, code management tools (git), build tools (maven) and ticket management tools (JIRA)
  • Excellent Java programming skills, demonstrating significant experience in a commercial development environment – experience with other languages such as Javascript, Python and others is an advantage
  • Able to work to a Test Driven Design (TDD) approach, and support other team members in adopting TDD 
  • Practical experience of delivering solutions in an AWS cloud environment
  • Knowledge of AI and machine learning, and an interest in process automation solutions such as RPA
  • Experienced with XML and XSLT, JSON and other information interchange approaches
  • Good working knowledge of standard design patterns and approaches to integration development
  • Experience with JBoss Fuse highly desirable, 
  • Natural self-starter, capable of both self-managed and team working
