CARE USA has taken on an ambitious transformational agenda, and we need great talent to support us!  The Director of Strategy and Planning will be responsible for asking the big questions (e.g., What is CARE's value proposition in a changing international development ecosystem? What would it take to shift North/South power dynamics in how we structure our teams and our work? How do we continue to mobilize support through changing aid budgets and donor preferences?) and conduct analysis to ground our answers in data and drive fact-based decision making. If you possess management consulting experience, and/or can help us make big-picture decisions, come join us!

Along with the Strategy team, the Director of Strategy and Planning will support design and execution of our strategic planning cycle (~every 5 years with mid-point reviews) and annual planning process, ensuring goals are clear and measurable, and plans are integrated across departments, countries, and regions. Helps track progress to facilitate continuous improvement and accountability. This role will work with our change communications team to ensure the organization is inspired by, understands and can fully live out our strategy. 

The Director will work with the Chief of Staff and Strategy to support executive and board-level discussions and decision making. They will support the Board Strategy Committee and act as a thought partner to the Global Management Team in structuring agendas, documents, and presentations to ensure board-ready quality. 

Creative problem-solving and problem structuring, quantitative analysis, strategic acumen, ability to communicate complex ideas in simple ways, strong work planning and project management, comfort with ambiguity, relationship-building and influencing skills, executive presence, and a bias toward action are important for success in this role.  A sense of humor and an unbending focus on the people we support is also desired.

Responsibilities:

    Strategic thinking and problem-solving

  • Leads development of the strategic plan/framework for the organization, taking a big-picture view of how the world is changing, structuring ambiguous problems, and conducting analysis to develop a perspective on implications for CARE's direction
  • Stays on top of trends in international development, fundraising, and impact measurement

   Analytics 

  • Ensures leadership uses data to inform decision-making
  • Leads on developing the approach and execution of fact packs and return on investment analysis
  • Visualizes data into easy-to-read graphs and creates slides that tell a story to enable efficient executive and board consumption

   Strategic and annual planning 

  • Attend Regional Leadership Team meetings to support strategic planning and supports capacity building to bolster strategic planning across departments, countries and regions
  • With the communications team, develops simple, engaging messaging and smart cascading to ensuring CARE employees know their part of our strategy

    Board and Executive Engagement 

  • With the Chief of Staff and Strategy, facilitate the Board Strategy Committee and acts as a thought partner to the Global Management Team in structuring documents, presentations and problem-solving to ensure executive- or board-readiness

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (MBA, MPP, MPA, or MA in International Development or equivalent), 7-10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have international experience or strong understanding of challenges facing the international development sector
  • Must possess the ability to review and analyze data, and ask the right questions
  • Fluent in Excel or PowerBI to cut financial or impact data sets in compelling ways; conducts quantitative analyses that help us stay grounded in data to acquire accurate results
  • Great at "story-lining" to build strategic narratives or to present options sets for executive decision.
  • Simplify our strategy so it is easily understood and inspires CARE supporters and staff
  • Must be extremely comfortable with Microsoft Office Suite, and specifically conducting analysis in Excel (e.g., formulas and pivot tables)
  • Must possess advanced verbal, written and cross-cultural communications skills
  • Demonstrated work planning and project management experience
  • Must have executive presence and excellent presentation skills
  • Top tier management consulting experience valued
