 The Gender Justice team along with CARE colleagues across the globe is creating an enabling environment for gender justice champions to ensure gender, power and justice are interwoven into the fabric of all CARE does as an organization. The Gender Justice (GJ) team, a community for the courageous pursuit of equality sits within the Program Partnerships and Learning (PPL) division at CARE USA. 

CARE is seeking a Director, Strategy and Operations- Gender Justice who will support this dynamic and diverse team in advancing gender equality globally through significantly contributing to CARE’s Global Program Strategy 2020 goals. The Gender Justice team is responsible for leading CARE’s Gender equality women’s voice (GEWV) approach across CARE, and the Director will play a key role in supporting the operations of this along with the Sr. Director of Gender Justice. The implementation of the GEWV approach relies on collaborative efforts from teams across the confederation so leadership implies an active coordination mechanism to support inputs from across CARE and with partners. 

The person in this role is responsible for managing 3-4 high performing team members (including technical advisors) that lead CARE’s efforts towards gender transformative programming priorities in line with CARE’s Global Program Strategy 2020 and the GEWV approach strategy. The position works closely with and reports to the Sr. Director of Gender Justice.

Aligned with the GEWV approach strategy, the GJ team supports a movement of gender justice champions making an impact in their communities across the globe through 5 key Areas: 1. Connect, 2. XChange, 3. Illuminate, 4. Amplify and 5. Catalyze.  Therefore, the Director, Strategy and Operations will also play a key role, along with other team members, in the coordination of gender justice efforts across the confederation on behalf of the CARE International (CI) Gender Network, and provide support to regional Impact Growth Strategies (IGS).

The Director, Strategy and Operations will ensure optimized team workflows, smooth operations; oversee team budgets and internal organizational request; cultivate a values-based culture, and support the implementation of CARE’s GEWV strategy globally. S/he will model leadership that is forward thinking, consultative and coaching, with a high level of negotiation and influencing skills.

Along with providing direct guidance and support to the Gender Justice Team, the person in this role will liaise closely with other CARE USA technical teams, CARE member partners, CARE USA Regional and Country teams and external partners.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the overall day-to-day operations and coordination of the Gender Justice team functions, including, but not limited to team operations (budgets, staffing)
  • Provide representation and thought leadership on gender equality
  • Support fundraising efforts
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required as a member of Gender Justice and PPL

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to gender justice and CARE’s core values: transformation, integrity, diversity, equality, excellence
  • Masters’ Degree in Social Sciences, Ph.D., or equivalent experience in gender preferred
  • Formal training in gender studies, women’s studies or a research focus on issues related to the job
  • 10 years of experience in International Development required
  • 8 years of experience in the international field of gender equality/women’s empowerment
  • 5-7 years of management /supervisory experience required
  • Demonstrated commitment and passion to gender justice and social justice issues
  • Extensive demonstrated conceptual and practical knowledge of gender issues, focusing on the history and practice of promoting girls and women’s leadership and empowerment
  • Strong and highly attuned interpersonal skills and aptitude to coordinate efforts among diverse groups
  • Conceptual and practical knowledge of gender analysis and understanding underlying causes of gender inequality
  • Must possess excellent process facilitation and presentation skills
  • Proven negotiation and influencing skills
  • Program design and Proposal writing skills required
  • Knowledge of donors’ gender strategies
  • Networking and strategic partnerships
  • Knowledge in gender-sensitive impact measurement and of M&E systems
  • Fluency in at least one world language, other than English, preferably Spanish, French, Portuguese or Arabic, desired
