Vital Strategies is a US-based international public health organization working in more than 70 countries to address important and challenging health issues. We develop and oversee programs to strengthen public health systems and address leading causes of morbidity and mortality, providing expertise in project implementation and management, strategic communications, epidemiology and surveillance, and other core public health capacities.

Resolve to Save Lives is a global health initiative of Vital Strategies that aims to save millions of lives by reducing preventable deaths from cardiovascular disease and by preventing infectious disease epidemics. Since September 2017, the Resolve to Save Lives Cardiovascular and Prevent Epidemics teams have been working closely with governments, the World Health Organization, the World Bank, academic and other partners in a number of low- and middle-income countries to strengthen national capacity to prevent, detect and respond to epidemic threats and improve cardiovascular health. The Media Manager will strengthen Resolve to Save Lives and its CEO’s media presence by delivering large-scale, strategic and impactful engagement with key media outlets. The incumbent will help raise the profile of the Resolve to Save Lives initiative by amplifying key messages and developing and implementing strategies that deliver impact. The Media Manager will report to the Resolve to Save Lives Communications Director and work closely with the CEO and members of the communications team.

Job Description:

  • Lead development and execution of Resolve to Save Lives’ reactive and proactive media strategies
  • Support the President and CEO in all media engagements, advise and direct support for all Resolve to Save Lives media inquiries
  • Manage media team members, including social media officer and press associate, and oversee external agency support if/when needed
  • Deliver compelling content including press releases, op-eds, statements, blogs, and case studies tailored to specific audiences and channels
  • Monitor news and industry trends in order to proactively pitch ideas for stories and articles
  • Craft news pitches for US, global and country-specific outlets
  • Research speaking and thought leadership opportunities, draft pitches, and prepare staff for external engagements in order to increase our reach in front of target audiences
  • Proactively establish, cultivate and maintain relationships with the media to identify and execute pitch and OpEd opportunities 
  • Oversee development of media kits, key messages, fact sheets, & other collateral material as needed
  • Assist in the organization of press events, including speaking engagements/panels, press briefings, media tours, set visits, and screenings, as applicable

Required Competencies and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7 years’ media experience or related communications (eg, TV/radio news programming, strategic communications, public affairs/ relations or digital communications)
  • University degree in communications field
  • Engaging, clear, effective and efficient communicator
  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated effectiveness at cultivating relationships with policymakers, thought leaders and the media
  • Strong understanding of US national, regional and global public policy issues; public health a plus
  • Self-motivated, outstanding organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high pressure environment with multiple stakeholders
