The Opportunity

The operations team is the essential stage crew for Vital Strategies’ production. Led by the Chief Operating Officer, it includes specialized teams managing global safety, international office operations, procurement, facilities, travel, and law.

We are seeking a Deputy Director, Global Operations who can collaboratively execute best in class procedures for opening and closing global operations in support of the organization’s programs and mission. A roll-up your sleeves kind of person, the Deputy Director will propose effective global operating models, standardize processes, lead projects, co-manage local operations and a myriad of other responsibilities in service of the fast-growing programmatic portfolio.

Project management pro. You will project manage the opening and closing of offices and the establishment of employers of record in close coordination with a cross functional team of internal partners and external vendors. You will set out frameworks to deliver required compliance and governance parameters and insist on the highest standards and operating models to facilitate program operations in-country.

Change Agent. You will influence senior leadership decision making on how to operate compliantly in countries where the organization has programming.

International Operations Manager. You will advise and support local country operational staff and connect them with organizational expertise at headquarters on matters such as procurement of vendor services, registration, compliance, contract negotiations, property management, and budget development.

Write the standards. You will develop new standard operating procedures and strengthen existing policies and procedures for opening and closing country offices as well as employers of record and help to create and update local operating manuals. The tools and guides you develop will balance agility with compliance.

We are looking for someone who gets the role of operations within a strong programmatic context. Someone who thrives in fast paced, dynamic environments. You are skilled at striking the balance between good customer service and ensuring compliance. You lead with a strong operational backbone to support the organizations’ mission and values and you are adept at building trusted relationships to operate in a complex environment. You have a get-stuff-done attitude, a collaborative approach, and a penchant for public health.

Operations Guru. You have spent 8+ years in an operations role (at least 5 years in management), preferably for a non-government organization with global experience in opening and closing offices.

Project management skills. Minimum 5 years’ experience leading projects in complex international operations, you enjoy working in a methodical way, breaking down projects into manageable parts. While others gloss over details, you embrace them. You have a gift for staying organized and being on top of all the details.

Troubleshooter. You see problems as mysteries to solve. With the help of colleagues and data, you solve them.

Street creds. You have a B.A. or B.S. and preferably a Master of Public Administration, Master of Business Administration, or Master in Public Health, or other relevant discipline.

People person. You are a natural leader and have a knack for working with others– for understanding their needs and creating simple solutions.

Numbers enthusiast. You love numbers and information. You understand global financial flows and have managed large budgets. Unquestionable ethics. You can spot financial and ethical problems. Equally important, you can identify resources and solutions.
