Vital Strategies has formed a COVID-19 Incident Management System to control and mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus in vulnerable low- and middle-income countries and the United States. A significant area of focus for our work in the US is accelerating and strengthening the technical and operational capacity of local public health departments to carry out impactful contact tracing to reduce the spread of infection and allow for the safe reopening of society as soon as possible.

The Role

We are seeking a Community Engagement Consultant to partner with local Departments of Health (DOH) in pilot jurisdictions in the US to establish and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, organizations and other stakeholders in communities vulnerable to COVID-19 to increase adoption of the contact tracing initiative. The Community Engagement Consultant will work with local leaders within communities vulnerable to COVID so that targeted messaging and practical solutions can be designed to enhance program adoption and reduce the spread of infection. The Consultant will report to a Communications lead within the Contact Tracing Acceleration Initiative.

Main responsibilities:

  • Partner with the local Departments of Health within pilot jurisdictions to identify and engage key communities vulnerable to COVID-19 that require deeper engagement to enhance adoption of contact tracing
  • In partnership with the DOH, engage community organizations and other key stakeholders and build trusting relationships with their leaders to foster collaboration with the public health initiative
  • Provide technical support and encourage community participation to create targeted messaging for outreach, training, and other community engagement activities
  • Identify barriers in community adherence to public health guidance so that targeted messaging and practical solutions can be designed to enhance program adoption and improve effectiveness and sustainability
  • Conduct ongoing monitoring and evaluation of community engagement activities
  • Document and disseminate lessons learned so that other communities can replicate effective techniques when working with vulnerable communities
  • Other duties as assigned

Required competencies and qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive community engagement or activist experience, preferably in a public health context
  • Bachelor’s degree and / or higher in social science, public health or another relevant field
  • Experience with planning and implementing targeted community engagement initiatives
  • Positive attitude and outstanding interpersonal skills, including ability to build trust and maintain relationships with community partners
  • Demonstrated cultural proficiency and experience working with diverse communities in urban neighborhoods
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred

Duration: Six months, with the possibility of renewal. Starting immediately.

Level of Effort: Full-time, fixed term employment.

Location: Remote initially; preferably based in NYC area.
