We are seeking a Program Associate with experience in public health, communications, and project management. The Program Associate will act as the primary support for the Obesity Prevention Program on a wide variety of projects and tasks.  S/he will support the grant and scholarship programs, and the development and implementation of communication campaigns in Vital Strategies focus countries.

The position is part of Vital Strategies’ Policy, Advocacy and Communications (PAC) global team of forty, comprised of people from varying background from public relations to advertising to communication research. The team has a collaborative culture, clustering people with different skills and backgrounds to execute projects. Vital Strategies’ global team values diversity and multicultural fluency.   

Specific Duties:

  • Support Vital Strategies PAC team in the development, implementation, and oversight of the Obesity Prevention program;
  • Serve as liaison between New York office, country teams, global and in-country partners;
  • Perform project management tasks related to the Program including, but not limited to, quarterly reporting on implementation progress, fiscal monitoring, and contract management;
  • Coordinate grant management and administration;
  • Manage the scholarship program including, but not limited to, program application and selection process, managing the award disbursement process, and reporting;
  • Draft fact sheets, columns, web and newsletter copy, and other materials as needed;
  • Provide support and assistance on events such as workshops, PR and campaign launches, and press conferences;
  • Assist in hiring, managing, and guiding vendors on projects including, but not limited to, creative, production, media and PR agencies, media planners, and research companies;
  • Monitor scientific literature on all obesity prevention issues and provide research assistance;
  • Maintain media resource library and facilitate communication material licensing process;
  • Support the Obesity Prevention team in day-to-day functioning;
  • Additional duties as may be mutually agreed upon by Vital Strategies and the Department;

Qualities and Qualifications:

  • University degree with 4 years of job-related experience in advertising, communications, public relations, and/or public health;
  • Strong interest in public health;
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to successfully manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines;
  • Experience with grants management and negotiation, financial management, and compliance preferred;   
  • Proven track record of managing projects, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and meeting deadlines;
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively in an international team environment with solid interpersonal and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience working at the international level and in cross-cultural settings preferred;
  • Experience working with NGOs and public interest groups on public policy initiative;
  • Strong oral and written proficiencies in English required, fluency in Spanish a plus;
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook);
  • Ability to travel internationally if needed;
