Vital Strategies, based in New York City, is an international public health organization. We develop and oversee programs to strengthen public health systems and address leading causes of illness, injury and death, providing expertise in project implementation and management, strategic communications, epidemiology and surveillance, and other core public health capacities. Our specific programs include, tobacco control, road safety, obesity prevention, and activities to strengthen public health data systems and the use of public health data to guide policy and decision-making. Vital Strategies is looking for a Designer to design and support all of the organization's digital properties and focus on support for STOP (Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products), on-going work to expose how the tobacco industry is undermining public health around the world. 

Our ideal candidate shows strong web design thinking and is interested in joining our mission-driven team in New York City. Your role in the creative team is to design and support our digital products and assets. Reporting to the Creative Director and embedded within Vital Strategies' design team, the Designer will support all of the organization's programs with an emphasis on STOP. With STOP, he/she/they will conceive, execute and manage design of digital materials that will help STOP engage and expand its audiences. 

STOP exposes the tobacco industry’s unethical business practices, attempts to undermine tobacco control, work to derail policy, and efforts to hook a new generation of smokers. STOP is a three-year partnership that includes robust monitoring, research, reporting and communication.

Funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, STOP is comprised of four constituent partners, each offering a unique set of capabilities to the initiative. Vital Strategies’ role within the partnership is to ensure that the watchdog’s research and activities are widely disseminated and used by stakeholders such as journalists, national policymakers and the global tobacco control community.

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team in prototyping and refining design for digital experiences
  • Participate or lead brainstorming sessions, design workshops, exercises or sprints
  • Design engaging web experiences based on rigorous research
  • Develop and manage development of websites from start to finish
  • Create landing pages, microsites and interactive graphics
  • Support expansion of visual identities and brand systems
  • Develop digital-first templates that can accelerate the speed at which content is disseminated
  • Design social media shares that generate engagement with content
  • Support graphic and print design of short- and long-form materials such as reports, policy briefs, company profiles and country overviews
  • Perform other duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in UX/UI web design, digital communications or experience design
  • Demonstrated application of typography design for digital use
  • Experience working on at least one major website re-design
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a project from concept to final design package
  • Experience working as part of an in-house design team
  • Experience in creating and/or managing brands that have scaled up globally
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in design-related field 

Desired Skills

  • Fluency with Indesign, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, INvision or similar applications
  • Ability to communicate complex, abstract concepts using visual, verbal and written language
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS, illustrations and data visualization
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a small team, and across time zones and platforms
  • Ability to effectively solicit and apply feedback to improve designs
  • Ability to work fast, meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks and thrive in a fast-paced environment
