Vital Strategies is looking for a Digital Communication Officer to help expose how the tobacco industry is undermining public health around the world. The Digital Communication Officer will be dedicated to Vital Strategies’ work with STOP (Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products), a global industry watchdog.

STOP exposes the tobacco industry’s unethical business practices, attempts to undermine tobacco control, work to derail policy, and efforts to hook a new generation of smokers. STOP is a three-year partnership that includes robust monitoring, research, reporting and communication.

Funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, STOP is comprised of four constituent partners, each offering a unique set of capabilities to the initiative. Vital Strategies’ role within the partnership is to ensure that the watchdog’s research and activities are widely disseminated and used by stakeholders such as journalists, national policymakers and the global tobacco control community.

The Digital Communication Officer will manage and optimize STOP’s website, email marketing and search strategy. Reporting to the Director of STOP, he/she/they will work analyze performance of these channels and work collaboratively with content creators, designers, and consultants to continuously improve audience engagement with STOP content.

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 


  • Analyze web, email and SEO analytics and make recommendations to improve performance
  • Provide regular reports and insights on digital performance


  • Publish new content to website
  • Build new pages, templates, landing pages and microsites, working with internal or external developers, designer and content owners
  • Troubleshoot website bug and technical issues
  • Mange website hosting and maintenance agreements

Digital Advertising

  • Support development and execution of digital advertising campaigns and paid social media promotion
  • Track and report on advertising campaign performance

Email Marketing

  • Develop and execute an email marketing strategy
  • Build and maintain email distribution lists

Search Engine Optimization

  • Develop and execute a search engine optimization strategy for STOP content
  • Perform periodic reviews of search engine optimization
  • Apply best practice methods to improve search performance
  • Keep up-to-date on changes to search algorithms, tools and best practices


  • Identify and evaluate new technologies, tools and best practices that can be used to improve content performance
  • Perform other duties as needed


  • Minimum four years of experience in digital marketing, communications or advertising
  • Demonstrated success improving website, search and email performance
  • Experience managing a rapidly expanding WordPress environment
  • Experience in planning and executing at least one major digital advertising campaign
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Design (Graphic, Interaction, Visual, Social Impact)

Desired Skills

  • Fluency with WordPress and the WordPress application ecosystem
  • Deep understanding of Google analytics and search engine optimization principles
  • Knowledge of HTML
  • Working knowledge of MailChimp for email marketing
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a small team, and across time zones and platforms
  • Ability to work fast, meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks and thrive in a fast-paced environment
