Vital Strategies is looking for a campaign manager to expose how the tobacco industry is undermining public health around the world. The campaign manager will be dedicated to Vital Strategies’ work with STOP (Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products), a global industry watchdog.

STOP exposes the tobacco industry’s unethical business practices, attempts to undermine tobacco control, work to derail policy, and efforts to hook a new generation of smokers. STOP is a three-year partnership that includes robust monitoring, research, reporting and communication.

Funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, STOP is comprised of four constituent partners, each offering a unique set of capabilities to the initiative. Vital Strategies’ role within the partnership is to ensure that the watchdog’s research and activities are widely disseminated and used by stakeholders such as journalists, national policymakers and the global tobacco control community.

The Campaign Manager will drive integrated communication strategies aligned with campaign themes, with an emphasis on media relations, digital communications, stakeholder engagement and strategic advertising. Reporting to the Director of the STOP partnership at Vital, the Campaign Manager will work closely with the Vital team on campaign planning, message development, announcement strategy, social media campaigns, digital marketing and event strategy. The Campaign Manager will liaise with communication staff from the four partner organizations to ensure alignment on strategies and content.

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Devise and execute integrated marketing campaigns that effectively expose tobacco industry practices that undermine public health
  • Ensure campaign materials are consistent with messaging and accurate
  • Manage proactive and reactive media outreach, with an emphasis on international and U.S. media
  • Coordinate media relations with STOP communications contacts in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa
  • Write and edit press releases, statements from STOP leadership, and other press materials
  • Brief and oversee the work of external agencies
  • Manage paid media to support campaigns
  • Support interviews, events and other stakeholder engagement opportunities to ensure campaign messaging is being delivered
  • Build and maintain relationships with domain experts and key stakeholders
  • Liaise with partners and other experts to align on campaign strategies and tactics
  • Monitor news and industry trends and proactively develop stories about industry behavior for non-technical audiences
  • Ensure accuracy of campaign materials
  • Perform other duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • 10 years of progressive experience in political campaigns, public relations or advocacy
  • Demonstrated experience in driving political or advocacy campaign success
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication and storytelling
  • Experience working with high-level media on politically sensitive subject matter
  • Experience in international settings, ideally in low and middle-income countries
  • Experience managing external agencies
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, English or relevant subject area
