The Position

Vital Strategies is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Head of Environmental Health Communications based in Singapore.  Applicants must possess or be eligible for a valid work permit for Singapore. 

 

Overall Role:

The candidate will spend two-thirds of his/her time leading the global communications for the Environmental Health division, including the management of air pollution and related environmental health advocacy communication campaigns. The other third of his/her time will be spent on strategically developing the brand presence of Vital Strategies in the region and contributing to the overall organizational marketing and promotion efforts.  The Head of Communications will work with a world-class team of environmental health and communication experts with a culture of supportive teamwork, rigorous evaluation, innovation and good humor. 

S/he will lead a team of communications specialists and develop strategies, using earned media, paid and social media, to shape public opinion around air pollution in Southeast Asia. S/he will be responsible for developing and overseeing research activity to assess public perceptions and beliefs about air pollution and its sources, and use those findings to formulate campaigns that raise awareness, concern and promote knowledge and belief that air quality can be improved through governmental action. Working through in-country officers and NGO partners, technical experts and managing external agencies, s/he will launch, manage and evaluate focused campaigns. S/he will also be an integral part of Vital Strategies’ Singapore-based team, growing the Vital Strategies brand presence in Asia by developing regional narratives, pitching senior spokespeople to media and striking up strategic communications-driven partnerships.

The ideal candidate will be a writer who can craft sharp, public messages from technical source material and think creatively about how we can capture the attention of journalists, policy makers and the public to advance health-based program and policy initiatives to improve air quality, reduce exposure to toxins, and advance climate change agendas.  S/he can juggle multiple priorities and has terrific judgment, pulling in other team members and expertise from the larger team as required. Some regional and international travel will be required.

 

Specific Duties: 

  • Guide the work of external vendors such as survey firms, PR, social media and creative agencies
  • Working with communications manager and Policy, Advocacy and Communications team to develop pitch and campaign ideas, content for external affairs and social marketing campaigns
  • Working with environmental health team specialists (scientist, epidemiologist and program officer) to conduct public opinion surveys, focus groups, and media campaigns that inform strategic communications and outreach on ambient and household air pollution and other environmental health issues
  • Creation of many different types of content, including press releases, opinion pieces, letters to-the-editor, social media content, web copy and more 
  • Tracking communication activities, reach and successes 
  • Organize media training and coaching for spokespeople as required
  • Support business development initiatives for the environmental health team, including development of funding proposals and reporting back to donors

 

Qualification and Skill Set:

  • BA or higher degree in public or media relations, journalism, or related field 
  • 10 or more years of experience in communications, public relations or marketing communication role. At least 5 years of experience working with a non-profit organization, preferably in the environment or health sector.  
  • Proven track record in developing and executing innovative and effective campaigns.
  • Strong interest in environmental health concerns and familiarity with translating scientific information for lay audiences
  • Highly organized, attention to detail, independently motivates 
  • Exceptional writing ability and strong verbal and presentation skills 
  • Great teamwork and “people” skills
