The Coordinator, Special Education is responsible for: 1) coordinating the Experiential Education Internship (EEI) program, an inclusive internship program for people with intellectual disabilities interested in arts administration. 2) supporting other special education programs and projects, including professional development resources, webinars, and workshops, and the VSA Intersections: Arts and Special Education Conference, and 3) assisting with other programs and projects of the Office of VSA and Accessibility. This position reports to the Manager, Special Education.
Duties and Responsibilities:
35% Coordinate Experiential Education Initiative (EEI) Internship Program
Administer and run the Experiential Education Initiative (EEI) Internship program for young people with intellectual disabilities and/or multiple disabilities.
Worksite Design, Hiring, Recruitment: Identify appropriate internship placements, write job descriptions and assist supervisors to craft appropriate work experiences. Carry out all aspects of recruitment and hiring process, including clear and effective communication with social service agencies that refer applicants. Develop and maintain positive relationships with local transition/social service agencies to identify potential interns and serve as a liaison between the service providers, Kennedy Center staff, and EEI Interns and their families.
Intern Support: Support EEI interns in their worksite placements, including setting goals and objectives, providing job coaching and structured intervention techniques as needed. Assist the interns in mastering job tasks, and administrative procedures. Foster the interns’ meaningful inclusion in the Kennedy Center workforce, including the college internship program. Train and support supervisors during the intern’s placement. Exercise good judgment and discretion to provide crisis management and intervention when unforeseen problems arise. Write incident reports and coordinate response.
Program Administration: Document the program’s development and execution, and assist in reporting. Collect and analyze program data and report on impact. Represent the program and the Kennedy Center on social media and in the community through presentations and attendance at local disability community events. Work with office social media team to identify relevant transition-related articles and resources to share with the VSA Network.
45% Special Education Program Support
Support coordination for other special education programs as assigned, including professional development activities such as webinars, resource publication, and the VSA Intersections: Arts and Special Education Conference and related activities.
Professional Development: Support the planning and implementation of the VSA Intersections: Arts and Special Education Conference. Coordinate, administer and lead/facilitate a professional development webinar series. This will include assisting presenters with their materials, bios, powerpoint presentations, and other written supplements.
Logistics: Coordinate logistics and administrative needs for professional development programs, including registration tracking, travel arrangements, communication, and reporting.
Internal and External Support: Support and advise internally and externally on creative careers, internships, transition, and workforce readiness programming for people with disabilities. Develop and produce resources and provide technical assistance on issues in workplace inclusion and transition. Assist with VSA Contract work in this area. Work to build productive relationships throughout the organization.
20% Administrative Duties
Support the Manager, Special Education and coordinate daily office activities. Maintain relevant office systems, contact databases, marketing strategies, and registration logistics. Respond to phone calls, email and other forms of communication. Attend meetings to represent the office as assigned. Prepare and keep current financial information, process contracts, requisitions, and purchase orders in a timely manner. May be required to travel on an occasional basis.

Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of program administration or service coordination experience; additional experience in one or more of the following fields: special education, job coaching, social services, or transition support.
Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required
In-depth knowledge of best practice in supporting young adults with intellectual disabilities in workplace settings. Must understand issues related to and affecting the professional experiences of people with disabilities, and have experience supporting adolescents/young adults with disabilities and their families.
Demonstrated experience in special education and knowledge of current issues and concerns in transitioning youth with disabilities from educational environments to the workplace. Must have knowledge of some or all of the following: typical and atypical student development, developmental and cognitive/intellectual disabilities, autism, language and learning disabilities, communication disabilities such as deafness and/or blindness, and awareness of the broad spectrum of disability.
Familiarity with arts education issues and working knowledge of the performing arts, theater jobs, and theater administration helpful.
Excellent written communication and attention to detail. Must be able to analyze and express concepts related to workplace accommodations, job coaching, and intervention supports for both the professional and the layperson.
Strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships.
Strong communication skills, pleasant manner and demeanor, good phone skills. Ability to take charge and work independently, yet still take instruction and work with a team. Must manage and complete complex assignments with moderate supervision. Excellent time management skills as well as the ability to prioritize projects, while responding quickly to internship-related issues. Must have the ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, handle numerous tasks simultaneously, and handle confidential information. Demonstrated ability to shift priorities in order to achieve high value work.
Must be comfortable interacting with staff from a variety of departments, local service providers such as schools and social service agencies, and persons with disabilities and their families.
Must be proficient with core office skills including office, phone and email etiquette, and with core office computer applications such as Go-to-Webinar/Meeting, Excel, Word and Power Point.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and on the telephone. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel in order to operate computer keyboard, office equipment, and other essential tasks. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and reach with hands and arms. This position infrequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
Frequent work away from desk/traditional office environment, including supporting interns at events and in job settings throughout the Kennedy Center, visiting social service agencies, and attending networking meetings that support the local communities of practice in transition-related settings.
Position will also require desk work, and comfort in office environment for extended periods of time, such as while recruiting interns in between internship sessions.
Must be able to work in an open office environment and in large crowded noisy public places.
The noise level in the work environment is moderate. It is an open cube office in which conversation, photo copier, and Braille embossing machine can be heard easily.
Must be able to clearly communicate with people with and without disabilities who have a variety of communication styles.
Occasional evening and weekend work required for activities, shows, and events that are scheduled in advance and added last-minute in response to a request.
Travel up to 10% may be required.
