The Store Manager will be responsible for the oversight of all aspects of daily operations as well as providing the leadership, vision, and innovation that will further Powell’s as a world-class leader in retail.

They will inspire a culture of exceptional customer service and will ensure our customer-first mission is present in all aspects of operations. This is a working management position that will develop and champion the talented team of leaders within the store to respond quickly to changing needs and step up to new challenges.

As a downtown landmark and institution, Powell’s is Portland. We are a ‘City of Books’ within the city of Portland and serve as both an anchor and a beacon. The Store Manager will maintain a deep understanding of the downtown area retail landscape and leverage our brand to build relationships within our community and beyond. 

We’re seeking a leader who will courageously take risks, anticipate trends, and identify new avenues for growth. Our business is dynamic and focused on continuous improvement within an always changing retail environment. 

The Store Manager will drive the profitability of operations, with an emphasis on large-scale inventory management and logistics, cost control, profit and loss, and brand stewardship.

Position Summary: 

The Store Manager is responsible for all aspects of running the company’s flagship store to ensure it remains a world class bookstore. This includes developing and maintaining a strategic vision for the store that inspires a culture of exceptional customer service and continuous improvement. They maintain an active and deep understanding of the downtown retail landscape, as relates to its effect on the store. Also acquires an active knowledge of the overall retail world and the independent bookselling industry, so as to stay abreast of changes, anticipate trends and identify solutions that sustain the store’s position as a foremost leader in bookselling and iconic destination for visitors to Oregon. The Store Manager maintains a profitable operation, sustains strong sales and develops new avenues for growth- with a focus on profit and loss, large scale inventory management and logistics, cost controls and brand stewardship.  They manage a team of managers who carry out the day to day operations of the location. The Store Manager is responsible for developing, challenging, championing and sustaining leaders within the store who are capable of implementing the store’s mission and goals, and enabling the store management team and staff to successfully step up to challenges as they arise and respond quickly to changing needs. Works under broad established parameters and has wide latitude in decision-making authority.  Implements and furthers the Company's overall vision. Takes risks and creates a stimulating work environment. Works closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to obtain approval for the store’s operating budget, goals and objectives, and significant business decisions prior to implementation. This is a working management position as the Store Manager continues to perform and supervise duties in functional areas of the store as needed. Reports to the COO.


Essential Functions:

  • Oversee all aspects of the Burnside store to ensure the store meets the company’s customer service mission, values, and expectations.
  • Develop and maintain a strategic vision for the store that ensures long-term growth and profit.
  • Develop and maintain a strong and vibrant management team that acts as leaders for the store staff and guide management team in developing staff into leaders.
  • Manage and monitor store sales and profitability. Report financial results and trends.
  • Manage budgeting, financial planning, and expense control activities.
  • Analyze a wide variety of store data utilizing available software tools to assess current trends and identify necessary changes in course.
  • Incorporate change management into strategic plans to ensure smooth transitions and buy-in.
  • Select and hire management personnel and assist other mangers in hiring process.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, counsel and coach managers and employees.
  • Supervise and lead management team.
  • Active oversight and Burnside advocate for inventory, including sales, procurement, and processes.
  • Lead business planning activities identifying opportunities and trends.
  • Work closely with Chief Customer Officer to implement and support companywide customer service initiatives and standards.
  • Work closely with the company marketing team to plan and implement effective marketing strategies and promotions.
  • Work closely with Human Resources to establish policies, procedures, standards and controls.
  • Work cooperatively with other store managers and corporate staff to further company goals.
  • Maintain a deep knowledge of the books and gifts industry and establishes and foster relationships within the industry to keep the store ahead of trends and challenges.
  • Maintain a deep knowledge of the retail world overall, seeking out opportunities from other retail environments that can be adapted to the Burnside store in new and innovative ways.

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, related field or equivalent experience preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of large retail store manager experience or a minimum of three years of experience within Powell's as a manager of managers.
  • Demonstrated experience increasing and maintaining strong sales for a large store.
  • Demonstrated financial management and marketing skills.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing spreadsheet software and/or business analytics software strongly desired.
  • Demonstrated experience hiring and developing strong leaders.
  • Demonstrated successful project and change management experience.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Absolute ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Love of books and reading.
