Communications Intern

The International Executive Service Corps (IESC) has a Fall internship opportunity available in the Communications Department. This is an unpaid internship. The successful applicant must be able to commit to up to 20 hours per week.

IESC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to equitable, sustainable economic growth in developing countries. We believe that a robust private sector is the cornerstone of resilient economies and stable countries, and since 1964 IESC has strengthened small and medium enterprises around the world. We work in the areas of market linkages, finance and investment, business enabling environment, market-led agriculture, workforce development, and institutional capacity building.

IESC’s Communications Department is responsible for communicating about the organization and its impact to our key audiences: clients, partners, volunteer experts, and the general public. The department develops key, consistent messages that support IESC’s mission, ensure its future success, and convey the IESC brand. The Communications Department is responsible for all aspects of communications: internal, external, website, traditional and social media, etc.

The internship program is open to students in graduate and undergraduate programs. Students that have graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program within 6 months of applying are eligible for the internship. Previous internship(s) and/or professional work experience preferred. Strong research and writing skills, and an ability to work independently are needed. Knowledge of and interest in nonprofits, development, or international affairs would be preferred.

Reporting to: Director of Communications


  • Write or edit a variety of communications, including social media and blog posts, impact stories, reports, and news releases;
  • Assist with final stage of IESC’s website redesign project;
  • Support the planning and execution of communications campaigns, including web, email, and social media;
  • Provide research assistance on a variety of communications projects; and,
  • Support new business proposals with research, graphics, editing, as necessary.


  • Exceptional writing skills and the ability to tailor writing to different media and audiences;
  • Strong knowledge of social media and how to use it as a tool to build visibility and engagement (experience with Hootsuite a plus);
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office;
  • Strong online research abilities;
  • Thoughtful interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a wide variety of people at all levels, both U.S. and international;
  • Enrolled in a communications, journalism, English, international relations, or related degree program, or have recently obtained such a degree.


  • Desktop publishing and graphic design skills a plus.
