The Senior Accountant is responsible for general accounting functions at the corporate level including reporting and analysis for ARA.
American Realty Advisors (ARA) is a private equity real estate firm which acts as the sponsor of various commingled funds which invest in real estate assets throughout the United States. Our strategies include value add, core, structured finance, mezzanine debt and other types of investments. ARA also acts as the investment manager for separate accounts tailored to our investor’s goals. All our institutional investors are tax-exempt.
The Senior Accountant is responsible for general accounting functions at the corporate level including reporting and analysis for ARA. Responsibilities include preparing the month-end closing, semi-monthly payroll accounting, maintaining fixed asset tracking and depreciation, assisting in the preparation of annual budgets, quarterly financial statement package, quarterly tax projections, and annual tax return preparation. The Senior Accountant is a part of a team that evaluates and maintains policies and procedures to identify, resolve, and document accounting controls.
ARA is a registered investment advisor under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and an ERISA fiduciary with approximately $10 billion in assets under management. ARA, through its funds and separate accounts, acquires real estate investments throughout the United States.
Participate in and make recommendations for the implementation of corporate policies and procedures such as invoice processing, cash management, and calculation of fees due to ARA.
Ensure that policies and procedures follow GAAP.
Analyze the applicable accounting standards and prepare monthly financial statements and related footnotes consistent with relevant provisions thereof.
Execute the monthly close process, including analysis of monthly operating results.
Ensure accurate maintenance of accounting records.
Organize and prepare work papers supporting the monthly close process and month-end balances.
Review, analyze, and record journal entries required to reflect monthly activity.
Review expenses incurred on behalf of multiple entities’ accounting services and analytical services.
Participate in the preparation of the annual budget.
Implement, document, and maintain adequate internal controls to improve the close and reporting cycles to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
Cross-train and be available to provide backup assistance for treasury, accounts payable, and accounts receivable responsibilities.
Compile the Quarterly Executive Summary Report.
Assist accounts payable processes, including corporate payables, payables for Title Holding Entities, and allocations of costs incurred on behalf of multiple entities.
Assist with monthly and quarterly billings for asset management fees, incentive fees, acquisition fees, disposition fees, QPAM services, and other fees according to their respective agreements.
Act as primary administrator for various accounting and expense reporting software including, Concur, Avid, and CounselLink.
Ensure all accounting related payroll transactions are processed in a timely and accurate fashion.
Reconcile payroll before transmission to ARA’s payroll vendor, Paychex, validate reports, and prepare the payroll journal entries.
Review and reconcile paid time off balances and employee benefits liabilities.
Update and reconcile monthly bank statements for ARA’s payroll account.
Review quarterly and year-end payroll tax return filings prepared by Paychex.
Create ad-hoc reports from ARA’s payroll system as needed.
Prepare work papers in support of the annual tax return.
Participate in the preparation of the annual tax return with outside CPA firm.
Extract data and analyze tax codes in support of the annual tax return.
Maintain fixed asset records for ARA and coordinate quarterly inventory of fixed assets with IT.
Any other responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time.
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting.
Advanced degree or professional designation preferred (i.e., C.P.A.).
Minimum of three years of experience in the accounting and finance sector.
Minimum of three years of experience working as a Senior Accountant or in an equivalent position, for a service provider such as a management service, preferably in the real estate industry.
At least three years of experience processing multi-state payroll.
Expertise with Paychex Flex payroll system is preferred.
“Big Four” or national accounting firm audit experience is preferred but not required.
Substantial experience in both the private and public accounting sectors is preferred.

Status: This role is considered exempt under the Federal Labor Standards Act.
Expected work hours: 8:30 to 5:30, Monday through Friday with occasional weekends.
Travel: May be required to drive a personal vehicle for business occasionally.
Work environment and physical demands: General office environment includes but not limited to periods of sitting at a computer, standing at a copier, and carrying files.
