The Medical Coding Supervisor will report to the Coding Manager and be responsible for the day-to-day activities in the coding department including, but not limited to, managing work loads, working closely with staff to ensure coding accuracy, coaching and training staff, monitoring reporting and working with the management team for operational improvement and excellence.

Summary

Reporting to Manager, Medical Coding, responsible for supervising the day-to-day activities of medical coding staff.  Prepares and analyzes reports to monitor and improve efficiency, accuracy and work load allocation of medical coding staff.  Works closely with Manager and Director to help identify areas for medical coding operational improvement.                                                                               

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Ensures that medical coding is conducted in compliance with Federal, State, and payer regulations, guidelines, and requirements.
  2. Assists in the development and implementation of coding policies and procedures, in accordance with Federal and State regulations and UNMMG policies and procedures.
  3. Provides advice and assistance to Manager in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of modifications for operations improvement.
  4. Interaction and feedback to providers, when necessary, regarding medical documentation deficiencies or to request clarification of documentation components.
  5. Ensures strict confidentiality of medical records and documentation.
  6. Responsible for analyses as well as resolution of coding edits that occur.

Minimum Job Requirements

High school diploma or GED with 3 years of medical coding experience.  1-year experience in a Lead or Supervisory role preferred.  Certification in at least one of the following:  CPC, CPC-P, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, or RHIT. Verification of education and licensure will be required if selected for hire.

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of medical coding systems, as appropriate to the position.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Fingerprinting, and subsequent clearance, is required.
  • Must provide proof of varicella & MMR immunity or obtain vaccinations within 90 days of employment.
  • Must obtain annual influenza vaccination.
  • If this position is assigned to a clinical area, successful candidate will be required to complete a pre-placement medical evaluation/health screen.  Required N-95 mask fitting, testing, vaccinations to include annual TST, Tdap, and Hepatitis B will be determined based on location and nature of position.
