This is a clinical Medical Physicist position in a busy Radiation Oncology Department. Must be able to work under indirect supervision to provide high quality medical physics services for patients. Medical physics quality assurance responsibilities cover a range of treatment modalities, including external beam treatments with two Elekta Linacs and a Tomotherapy unit, high dose rate treatments with a Varian HDR unit, permanent seed prostate implants and stereotactic radiosurgery. The position also includes some treatment planning responsibilities. The Medical Physicist will work as a team member and participate as an educator in radiation oncology. An interest in pursuing research projects and teaching is desirable. Must be ABR Board Eligible and have passed Part 1 of the ABR certification examination.

Under indirect supervision, provides professional medical physics services for a principal radiation research/therapy unit of the UNM Medical Group. Evaluates and interprets medical radiation treatment prescriptions. Collaborates with medical providers in the design and modification of effective radiation treatments for patients; oversees and monitors patient treatment plans, provides quality assurance, participates in the development and execution of equipment monitoring, calibration, and safety surveys. As directed, participates in the implementation of new technologies and meets expected timelines.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops or assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization to ensure efficient and safe operation of radiotherapy treatments.
- Participates in the education and training of dosimetrists, radiation therapy technologists, students, physicians and related specialists, as appropriate.
- Provides HDR treatments, prostate see implants, placing diode detectors to patients.
- Provides professional program assistance in the areas of patient simulation.
- Assists in the development of specifications for purchasing and assists in acceptance testing and commissioning of a wide range of advanced radiation therapy equipment.
- Performs calibration checks and quality assurance measurements of linear accelerators and other sources of radiation.
- Develops, and participates in integrated radiation therapy quality control programs.
- Advises and consults with medical providers and specialists concerning various issues involving individual patients.
- Assists with shielding analysis of treatment rooms.
- As directed, participates in budget planning, and reviews fiscal reports as required; participates in planning for future facility and equipment requirements.
- As directed, assists in research efforts in clinical radiotherapy.
- Maintains professional contact with peers through attendance at professional meetings and related activities.
- Participates in the establishment and coordination of broadly based radiation safety programs.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Assists in implementation and monitoring of a Quality Assurance Program to meet state and federal guidelines/requirements.
Minimum Job Requirements
PhD degree in Radiation Therapeutic Medical Physics or an equivalent field or discipline. Board Eligible as a certified Medical Physicist (American Board of Radiology or equivalent). Verification of education and licensure will be required if selected for hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

- In-depth knowledge and understanding of current radiation therapy principles, methods, procedures, and techniques.
- Knowledge and understanding of the operational characteristics, usage, and safety parameters of a comprehensive range of radiation therapy equipment and facilities. Ability to operate such equipment.
- Advanced knowledge of radiation safety principles, methods, and procedures
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations, guidelines, and standards for the provision of medical physics/radiation therapy to patients.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
- Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
- Ability to train employees on radiotherapy procedures, as directed.
- Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
- Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
- Fingerprinting, and subsequent clearance, is required.
- Must provide proof of varicella & MMR immunity or obtain vaccinations within 90 days of employment.
- Must obtain annual influenza vaccination.
- If this position is assigned to a clinical area, successful candidate will be required to complete a pre-placement medical evaluation/health screen. Required N-95 mask fitting, testing, vaccinations to include annual TST, Tdap, and Hepatitis B will be determined based on location and nature of position.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
- Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 50 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
