Accountabilities:

The successful candidate will join the T&D Technical Services Team of dedicated professionals, whose goal is to exceed our customer’s expectations in delivering reliable and cost effective energy and services. The Distribution Underground Engineer will provide Technical Support for the operation and maintenance of NSPI’s systems by ensuring that all work is conducted in accordance with NSPI’s policies, standards and work methods, thereby providing a consistent, safe and cost effective environment. The main functions of the role are:

  • Specify the requirements for padmount/submersible transformers, switches and all other distribution underground assets; procure all required assets
  • Perform drawing reviews of padmount/submersible transformers, switches and all other distribution underground assets
  • Specify and maintain required inventory for spare underground assets
  • Perform annual review and analysis for all underground feeders
  • Analyze and recommend follow-ups for underground inspection data (padmount/submersible transformers, padmount/submersible switches, etc.)
  • Evaluate and procure all test equipment for Underground Electricians
  • Research and evaluate all new/emerging underground technologies and develop strategy for new equipment/assets
  • Development of work methods for all new equipment
  • Provide technical recommendations and justifications for all underground capital projects, including long-term planning for asset replacements
  • Provide technical support during execution of all underground capital projects
  • Implement underground planning studies and design/operate the Halifax downtown core underground system
  • Recommend reliability improvements for all underground feeders

You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of co-workers, by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.

Skills, Capabilities and Experience:

You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and are a full member (or eligible for membership) with Engineers NS. You are a self-starter with proven organizational and analytical skills who is able to function effectively in a team environment. You possess strong communication & interpersonal skills, strong computer skills, a demonstrated commitment to personal development, a valid driver’s license, and a willingness to provide after hours consultation and emergency power restoration work.

A minimum of five years relevant experience is required. Experience in electric utility operations is a definite asset. Knowledge of electrical distribution systems and equipment also considered an asset.
