We are currently looking to fill the position of Energy Marketing & Planning Specialist.


  • Optimizing and planning Nova Scotia Power’s generation assets and transmission portfolio in the day-ahead physical energy market
  • Monitoring of external power markets (ISO-NE, NYISO, IESO) and evaluating physical energy flow opportunities through analysis of transmission availability (using OATI webOASIS) in order to make prudent import/export decisions
  • Ability to grow strong, effective relationships with counterparties and negotiate mutually beneficial trading opportunities
  • Analyzing day-ahead unit commitment and producing an economically balanced day-ahead schedule for NSPSO (Nova Scotia Power System Operator)
  • Communicating clearly and concisely with a broad range of stakeholders, including energy dispatch at the NSPSO and personnel at generating stations
  • Working closely with NSPSO to ensure NS Power’s dispatch plan is economic, taking into consideration all system and environmental constraints
  • Purchasing transmission and tagging day-ahead transactions, as required.


You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of co-workers, by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.

Skills, Capabilities and Experience:  

  • Degree in a related field (engineering, science, business or economics), diploma / certification in a related field (Electrical / Electronic Technology or Power Engineering, etc.) or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Computer skills an asset (Excel, programming in VBA, VB, C#, SQL, etc.)
  • Completion or a willingness to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC)
  • Three to five years’ experience in a utility or related industry which could include some combination of power desk experience, natural gas desk experience, operations experience in generating stations, field experience with bulk transmission systems and / or power system operations experience
  • Three to five years’ experience in negotiating price and other terms and conditions of power purchase and sales agreements, with proven capabilities in managing market risk
  • Ability to understand and interpret market rules and transmission tariffs
  • Exceptional communication skills and desire to achieve strong results
  • Ability to adapt to evolving industry standards and have strong analytical and modelling skills
  • Ability to remain focused, multi-task and perform in a fast-paced, high pressure environment
  • Ability to manage timelines and deadlines to meet internal and customer timelines
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to make decisions independently
