Position Objective:

As an integral part of the management team, this role leads the Health & Safety agenda, ensures compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations and manages the design, delivery, and standardization of the Environmental Health & Safety programs for the company. Working as a representative of Michels and a key member of a Design-Build Joint Venture (DBJV) team on a project recently awarded to Michels Canada and its partner.

Duration: 2 Years+

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Is a full-time employee who fulfills the duties of the “qualified coordinator” under the British Columbia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations;
  • Maintain the name of the qualified person(s) designated to be responsible for that employer's site health and safety activities;
  • Design, implement and oversee the Occupational Health and Safety Program;
  • Act as the sole representative and single point of contact for the Prime Contractor with respect to health and safety matters at the site;
  • Develop, complete and manage documentation and procedures with respect to sign-in/sign-out, mustering protocol
  • Participates in incident investigation and root-cause analysis of environmental, health and safety incidents, conducts, reviews, and communicates results of Investigations; 
  • Conduct Hazard Assessments, through task analysis, risk assessments and workplace inspections; Recommending and/or implementing corrective action;
  • Liaise with external agencies including WorkSafe BC;
  • Ensure that all injury claims are handled as per best practices and on a timely basis;
  • Maintains and communicates upgrades of H.S.E. Policies and Procedures to managers, and business leaders. Makes sure policies and procedures are developed, updated, implemented, and followed;
  • Participate in the subcontractor management process;
  • Responsible for implementation of project orientation and safety-related training for both mandated and site-specific topics;
  • Drive continuous improvement of programs through the development of action plans based on analysis of data, review of incidents, risks, and feedback from employees.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least five (5) years performing HSE duties and responsibilities listed above in heavy civil construction experience within the last ten (10) years.
  • Participation in a project with a Water Treatment Plant (WTP/WWTP)
  • Candidate must be local or willing to relocate to project location in Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours and shifts
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
  • Possess strong computer skills: Proficiency in MS Office including MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Professional certifications required - Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)®
  • Degree or diploma in a related field i.e HSE or OH&S
  • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written formats
