           Job Qualifications:      

This is an entry-level airframe design engineer position in the Aerostructures Engineering Organization. Under the general direction of the design lead, serve as a junior-level member of a design team providing conceptual and detail designs of primary and secondary structural aircraft components.  Primary product lines for design activities will be unmanned aerial vehicles, modification of existing aircraft structures, fixed and rotary wing, and design-to-build activities for commercial and military aircraft including composite and metallic primary and secondary structure, mechanical system components/routings and electrical/avionics systems component installations.  Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and written.


               Highly Desirable Qualifications:


  • Familiar with industry standards for the manufacture, repair and assembly of composite components for aerospace.
  • Experience with engineering and manufacturing development of structural parts and assemblies utilizing composite materials
  • Experience with the composite part design process, including composites stacking sequence, lamination theory, honeycomb core, bonded assemblies, manufacturing and fabrication processes and post-cure machining operations.
  • Knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 along with tolerance analysis capabilities.
  • Knowledge of CAD file structure.
    Experience in application ASME Y14.41 methods for Model Based Definition using CATIA V5 FTA (Functional Tolerancing and Annotations) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with CATIA V5 CPD (Composite Part Design) and/or FiberSIM is a plus.
    Ability to create and maintain parametric product geometry models is desired.
  • Experience with Smarteam product data management is desired.


                Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work under close supervision of the senior designer.
  • Produce airframe structural configuration layouts and detail designs including preliminary sizing, joint layouts, interface boundary definitions of parts and assemblies employing metallic and composite materials.  
  • Create and maintain CAD solid models and drawings of installations, assembly and detail components that meet all requirements such as structural integrity, interface boundaries, weight and cost targets as directed by the project engineer.
  • Coordinate with members of stress, manufacturing, procurement, quality control and other departments as required to mature the design from conception to production.  
  • Create documentation to support design decisions and to identify and resolve potential issues. 
    Participate in periodic design reviews as required to ensure designs meet the requirements.
  • Prepare detail design packages for review, check and release.
  • Assist the senior designer with PowerPoint presentations slides to support Program PDRs and CDRs.
  • Assists the project engineer in preparing for technical interchange meetings and technical program reviews.


                 Minimum Requirements:

  • BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering from an accredited university
  • Knowledge of 3D Computer Aided Design Program such as CATIA (preferred), Unigraphics, Pro/E or Solidworks w/ a focus on Generative Surface Design, Part Design and Assembly.
  • Hands on experience working with Carbon Composites, preferably through experience in a manufacturing environment. School / lab experience considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Must be a US Citizen or Legal US Permanent Resident


                Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to maneuver around equipment in test labs and on aircraft.
  • Some travel required.
