Under the general direction of assigned lead or manager, works on complex mechanical and thermal engineering projects: new product development, improvements to existing products or expansion of capabilities. Position focuses on projects involving heat transfer/fluid dynamics, mechanical design and control systems. Project involve thermal control, refrigeration, thermo-physical properties of dielectric fluids and air cooling control.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
Generate product or system specifications from customer product requirements document (PRD).
Perform customer applications research and support work, both in-house and at the customer site.
Perform thermal analysis work to determine if specifications are realistic and estimate risk exposure: Thermal Dynamics, CFD, Mathematical Models
Develop new technologies by generating proof-of-concept and initial prototypes, performing functional and reliability tests, and transferring the technology to a product development team for integration into a handler.
Develop new products.Product responsibility through by generating concepts, and prototypes, development, and first articles; performing functional and reliability tests, build and test, and supporting the manufacturing and field service organizations through product release and field deployment.
Develop project cost estimates.
Schedule projects and resource allocation using Microsoft Project.
Identify and document new technologies as Intellectual Property for the appropriate level of protection.
Facilitate integration of prototype into new or existing products.
Works directly with other engineers in mechanical, electrical, vision, software and technicians.
May provide technical guidance and to a wide variety of technical and professional employees.
Education/Training: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or closely related technical field. Master’s degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum of five years related engineering experience that includes heat transfer, fluid mechanics and mechanical design.
In-depth knowledge of heat transfer/fluid dynamics, mechanical design and control systems.
Proficiency in advanced level mathematical calculations concerning fluid mechanics, heat transfer and material stress analysis.
Knowledge of thermal analysis software.
Must possess technical knowledge and be able to provide direction in the following areas: heat transfer/fluid dynamics, mechanical design, layout and detail, electromechanical equipment purchase, engineering laboratory research & development, prototype specifications testing and customer demonstrations.
Knowledge of good engineering practices, GD&T, failure element analysis (FEA), mean time between failure (MTBF) and failure modes and effect analysis (FMEA).
Proficiency with SolidWorks/Cosmos (latest release) and practical experience with engineering documentation (i.e. detail drawings, fabrication specifications, Bills of Materials, Engineering Change Orders, etc.)
Engineering project management experience.
Strong analysis and problem solving skills.
Effective verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to work independently on projects and interface with other teams members.
Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Microsoft Project Manager.
Job Conditions/Physical Demands:
Domestic and international travel required. Works in an office environment and also in a lab environment with constant or intermittent noise. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or computer terminal. Ability to use keyboard.
