Executive Pastor

Mars Hill Church’s mission is to plant churches and make disciples. We have grown from a small Bible study to over 12,000 weekly attenders at 14 different churches in 4 states - Washington, Oregon, New Mexico, and California. Each Mars Hill Church is shepherded by a Lead Pastor and his second in command, the Executive Pastor. As Mars Hill Churches grow and additional churches are planted, there is an increased need for executive pastors at the local church. The ideal candidate brings a background in business with great faith in Jesus' supernatural role in building His church.

The executive pastor reports to the lead pastor of the local Mars Hill church. The role of an effective executive pastor is threefold: serve Jesus, serve the church, serve the lead pastor. The executive pastor oversees the other church staff and manages the day-to-day operations of the church. He serves the Lead Pastor in such a way that humbly complements the Lead Pastor’s weaknesses and allows him to work within his strengths. The Executive Pastor is not a successor or a Lead-Pastor-in-training. He loves second place, and is content to lead primarily from behind the scenes. This plays out in a number of ways:

  • The executive pastor organizes the church’s greatest resource for mission: people. The executive pastor focuses on the entire flock, aligning people with priorities. He manages the time and energies of the staff and key leaders. He is a pastor who shepherds people as they find their place on mission with Jesus.
  • The executive pastor stewards the church budget with integrity and security. He manages the local church budget and oversees spending of money to ensure that right priorities are funded first. He coordinates with Mars Hill Church central operations to maintain financial efficiency and effectiveness.
  • The executive pastor directs the use and care of the church’s facilities so that people are loved and Jesus is worshipped. He is a problem-solver who brings solutions to the other leaders from a biblical perspective.

  • Fulfill the duties required of Mars Hill Church members as outlined in the membership covenant.
  • Fulfill the character qualifications of a elder as taught in the Scriptures.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field required; MBA preferred.
  • Humble, desire to continually improve, and passion to build a world-class church and ministry operations.
  • Commitment to serving Mars Hill in role for at least three years to ensure a solid foundation and consistency.
  • Discretion, perseverance, patience, and sense of humor; team spirit and genuine caring.
  • “Kingly” in the Triperspectival Leadership model (prophet/priest/king): strong administrative and organizational skills and gifts, builder of strategies and systems, focused on details.
  • Results-focused leadership with persuasive interpersonal skills adaptable to a variety of personalities and situations.

  • 5+ years professional-level skills and experience with people, business, and financial management.
  • Strong teaching and training skills.
  • Entrepreneurial abilities, from big picture strategy to operational details.
  • Ability to lead volunteer teams, recruit, develop, and inspire people, set clear expectations and accountability.
