About the Position:

ESA is currently seeking a highly qualified and experienced senior-level Architectural Historian to manage staff and projects for a growing group of architectural historians within our Southern California Cultural Resources Group. The selected candidate will manage historic resources work on a wide range of interesting projects throughout the region and practice, and will be part of an interdisciplinary team that includes staff from our Water, Energy, Community Development, Transportation, and Airports practices. The successful candidate will have excellent management and organizational capabilities; agency coordination experience; a staff management and mentoring background; proficiency in management of historic architectural resources within the context of CEQA, NEPA, and Section 106; an ability to strategically guide clients through complex regulatory issues related to the built environment; experience preparing EIR/EIS sections and developing preservation-related alternatives and mitigation; and expertise in evaluation and treatment of a variety of resource types, including residential, commercial, and water and energy infrastructure. The selected candidate would be located in either ESA’s Los Angeles, Pasadena, or Santa Monica office.


Candidates must possess outstanding problem-solving ability, strong team-building and staff management skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, strong computer skills, and a demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary cultural resources team. Qualified candidates should have a Master’s Degree in Architectural History or related field, at least ten (10) years of professional experience in historic preservation or related field (meeting the Secretary of the Interior’s Standard for Architectural History and History), experience in Southern California, and a strong working knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and CEQA/NEPA compliance. Experience with local Los Angeles development projects is a plus.
