About the Position:

ESA is currently seeking a highly motivated Invoicing/Project Accountant Manager to effectively lead a team of project accountants (billers) in meeting or exceeding the organizational financial goals by partnering with Regional Leadership and project management teams to ensure seamless project accounting including billing, accounts receivable, budget and contract management, and ability to identify and track financial trends. This position will manage a team of 6-8 project accountants located in various offices. Management responsibilities may require up to 15% travel time to regional offices located in CA, OR, WA, and FL.

Preference given to applicants with management experience in Environmental or Architecture and Engineering (A&E) consulting and use of Deltek Vision accounting software. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Train and Manage team of 8+ project accountants in project invoicing/billing responsibilities

  • Manage project invoicing cycle from initial billing to receipt of payment;

  • Focus on firm-wide DSO (Days Sales Outstanding) through efficient invoicing and collections;

  • Partner with Project Managers and Contracts Administrator on initial project contract execution, insurance coverage, subcontractor coordination, and maintenance for duration of the project contract (ie, budget modifications and rate increases);

  • Lead project accountants in working with project managers in reviewing project costs and proactively managing budgets;

  • Identify and track multiplier, profitability, and other financial trends for all projects/contracts;

  • Establish and maintain effective record-keeping systems for use by project accountants;

  • Collaborate with senior finance team members on various accounting projects to ensure firm-wide financial goals are being met;

Required Education/Experience:

  • BA/BS in accounting, finance, business or related degree preferred;

  • 7-10 years of progressive project/general accounting experience in A&E consulting or other service industry;

  • 3-5 years direct management experience in accounting department/function

  • Familiarity with complex invoicing requirements of local and state agencies;

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and Deltek Vision accounting system applications;

  • Good understanding of accounting concepts; 

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written); 

  • Strong people skills with positive attitude and customer service orientation; 

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and to set and meet deadlines;

  • Sound judgment, self-motivated;

  • Detail and solution oriented with good problem-solving skills; 

  • Ability to work well independently as well a part of a team;

  • Excellent organization and analytical skills.


This position would be based in our San Francisco office (possibility of Oakland, Petaluma or Sacramento), and will manage a team located in all of our offices (CA, OR, WA, FL).
