The Director of Communications provides leadership and directs ESA’s communications program, effectively informing and promoting our organization, brand, people, mission, products, and clients. As a key member of the corporate management team reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Communications helps shape our vision and image, as well as the best methods to communicate them. Responsibilities include developing and implementing strategies and programs for ESA’s internal and external communications, in alignment with ESA’s Strategic Plan. The Director of Communications also manages the corporate communications team and collaborates with a network of marketers and graphic designers throughout our regions as well as staff across the firm to share ESA’s story and strategic vision, with the purpose of raising awareness of and increasing engagement in our work to both internal and external audiences.


  • Identify press release/news opportunities and develop content to disseminate via social media, websites, newsletters, press releases, and other channels.

  • Ensure our messaging aligns with key business strategies.

  • Develop and execute major communications programs/campaigns.

  • Develop and ensure strategic use of ESA brand and image.

  • Plan, develop, and execute all publications and collateral materials, including conference materials/collateral.

  • Direct website and intranet development and maintenance, working with the IT Director.

  • Develop and manage client relations database.

  • Direct and produce interactive and audio/video products.

  • Design, review, and edit strategic planning and communications documents.

  • Develop and implement style guidelines for graphics to reflect our brand.

  • Initiate and monitor results for communications strategies for key marketing initiatives, program pursuits, and events.

  • Direct programs to sustain active client communications, including periodic client satisfaction surveys.

  • Develop communications strategy and support for staff recruitment, retention, award, and recognition efforts.

  • Oversee annual budgeting of communications programs.

  • Oversight of consultants/contractors for specific communications-related assignments.

  • Support Human Relations, Finance, and other internal teams with clear, consistent communications regarding staffing, organizational updates, and other initiatives. Direct surveys and other means to gain employee-owner feedback on progress toward goals.

  • Lead communications efforts for mergers and acquisitions, including integration, rebranding, and market research.

  • Partner with executive team on internal and external communications through planning and attendance at key meetings and presentations.

  • Occasional travel to regions to communicate/reinforce brand and work with senior marketing staff.

Immediate Priorities

  • Communications strategy and implementation support for key strategic marketing initiatives.

  • Website rebuild / redesign. Direct and manage website consultant.

  • Development and execution of internal communications to support staff recruitment and retention programs.

  • Reinforce ESA’s employee-ownership culture.

  • ESA brand re-invigoration, reinforcement, and management.


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in any of the following or related areas: Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, English, or similar field.

  • 10-plus years of relevant experience in management of corporate communications teams and strategies, including the design and implementation of strategic internal/external campaigns, preferably in the A/E or environmental consulting industry.

  • Creative, able to come up with new ideas and inventive ways to promote the organization.

  • Self-motivated – constantly developing new ideas and keeping up with technology. Proven innovator with a high degree of personal initiative.

  • Proven exceptional writing, editing, and oral communication skills with the ability to convey highly complex information in clear, compelling ways; ability to apply graphic concepts effectively to a variety of communications approaches.

  • Demonstrated experience with building online and social media presence.

  • Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and project and time management skills.

  • Ability to work well with teams of all levels of professionals, senior managers, and executives.

  • Track record of building consensus for projects and initiatives, ability to implement and follow through.

  • Ability to multi-task, manage multiple ongoing projects.

  • Enthusiastic, positive attitude, proven ability to inspire teams, and ability to adapt quickly to a fast-moving environment.

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other applications in the Office Suite. Deltek Vision and Adobe InDesign experience preferred. Solid digital media knowledge/experience required.

  • Desired location for this position is in ESA’s Northern California region, ideally in our San Francisco or Oakland offices.
