About the Position:

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is seeking a Senior Restoration Designer to lead our Seattle-based restoration group and grow our position in the Puget Sound region’s restoration market. We are looking for an experienced environmental consultant who has successfully managed planned, designed and implemented floodplain, stream, and/or wetland restoration projects in the Pacific Northwest, and specifically in the Puget Sound region.

The selected candidate will be a licensed engineer or similarly qualified restoration expert who can oversee and guide a growing team of engineers and landscape architects in ESA’s restoration business unit. The incumbent will work within a multi-disciplinary, multi-office region of natural resources scientists, environmental and community planners, archeologists, and restoration designers. This individual will be responsible for growing and advancing the restoration practice specifically in the Puget Sound region as well as the broader Pacific Northwest through successful marketing and business development, and be able to demonstrate a successful track record delivering a wide range of restoration and related design services. The selected candidate will have a strong reputation and client network within the Northwest restoration market.

Management responsibilities will include oversight, strategic direction, quality assurance, and technical oversight of a wide range of products such as hydrological models, geomorphological studies, feasibility assessments, conceptual designs, and engineering plans, specifications and estimates. This selected candidate must have a history of team-building, vision setting, strategy development and successful business plan implementation. The position will report to ESA’s Northwest Regional Director and may participate as a member of ESA’s Northwest Region Leadership Team.

This position provides a tremendous opportunity for a senior restoration professional to lead strategic growth and development within the Puget Sound / Northwest region. The selected candidate will join an extensive team of restoration practitioners at ESA working along the West and Gulf coasts and will be part of a focused companywide strategic initiative to expand ESA’s position in this incredibly important area of work.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee detailed engineering studies, oversee and interpret modeling analysis, and manage a wide range of ecological restoration projects from concept through to construction

  • Develop and implement restoration business plans for the Northwest Region

  • Recruit, manage and supervise engineers and other technical staff to ensure that project and client needs are met in a timely and effective manner; and facilitate professional development of staff

  • Lead business development, marketing and client stewardship activities including identifying project opportunities, preparing proposals, and leading interview teams to win and secure work

  • Manage projects from initiation to close out including negotiating scopes of work and being accountable for meeting schedule and budget requirements

  • Perform quality assurance and quality control functions consistent with the company’s QA/QC Plan

  • Meet and coordinate with clients, agencies, stakeholders, and contractors to achieve project goals

  • Present project and technical work to clients, agencies, peers and the public

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in analysis, design and delivery of ecological restoration projects in the Pacific Northwest; experience in the Puget Sound basin is highly desired.

  • B.S. degree in Civil / Water Resources Engineering, Geomorphology, Hydrology or closely related field; M.S. degree preferred.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Washington and Oregon and ability to take responsible charge for engineering designs developed collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams is highly desired.

  • At least 5 years of experience managing a business unit.

  • Experience working with agencies involved in restoration (i.e., the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bonneville Power Administration, tribes, ports, salmon recovery organizations and similar entities).

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with key environmental laws and policies including the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, etc., and the implications these laws/policies have onrestoration actions.
