About the Position:

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is currently seeking an Associate-level Biologist to be based out of our Petaluma or Oakland offices. Job duties may include biological surveys, report preparation, and construction monitoring related to compliance with biological and regulatory requirements. Central California biological field experience and compliance monitoring experience is preferred. The position may involve extensive field work, both locally and on overnight assignments. This physically demanding position will involve various working environments/conditions and requires that an individual be physically capable of canvassing large project areas by foot on various terrain and potentially in inclement weather.

The biologist will conduct biological and natural resource field surveys collecting observational data concerning a variety of wildlife species; use GPS units, tablets, topographic maps, aerial photographs, and other tools to perform vegetation/habitat mapping; perform pre-construction surveys and compliance monitoring for special-status species; and assist in protocol-level presence/absence surveys for sensitive animals and plants. Work stems from permit requirements under CEQA and NEPA, or from permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Regional Water Quality Control Board. Experience with these permit requirements is preferred.

Requirements:

2-5 years related work experience; bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, wildlife conservation or related discipline; experience with biological construction monitoring; experience in working with biological resources, and wetlands in the San Francisco Bay Area; experience with California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) strongly preferred but not required; strong technical writing, and critical thinking skills required; and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
