Description

The Assistant Manager of Development, WNO Board & Special Events, assists the Manager of WNO Individual Giving and Senior Manager of WNO Development in the management and long-term development of the WNO Board of Trustees ($35,000 annual minimum), including research, cultivation, acquisition, stewardship, and ongoing maintenance for both unrestricted and restricted contributions.  In addition, the incumbent also coordinates with the Manager of WNO Individual Giving, Senior Manager of WNO Development, Director of Kennedy Center Special Events, and other development colleagues in the administration and implementation of the WNO Opera Ball (generating $1M annually on average). The Assistant Manager oversees and generates work for a WNO Development Assistant and an intern.

Duties and Responsibilities:

35%   Coordinate all aspects of the WNO Board of Trustees Campaign ($1.8 M goal) including:

  • Drafting and editing all types of written materials (solicitations, acknowledgments, notes, research briefings, proposals, tax receipts, etc.) of varying length and complexity;

  • Identifying opportunities for gift increases and, in coordination with the Manager and Senior Manager, creating detailed and personalized solicitation strategies;

  • Actively stewarding Board members through direct contact via telephone, email, written communication, and personal visits on- and off-site;

  • Maintaining accurate donor records in hardcopy and electronic formats and in Tessitura;

  • Accurately processing gifts, preparing campaign progress reports, and regular reviewing with Assistant and Manager of WNO Individual Giving;

  • Maintaining systems to ensure donor recognition in print and online materials, involvement in ancillary activities and events, general benefit fulfillment, and accurate and timely renewal of gifts.

  • Coordinating donor benefit, cultivation, and auxiliary events:

    • Developing guest lists, invitations, catering, budget, and overall logistics

    • Determining and coordinating appropriate follow-up following each event

35%   Work closely with the Board Chairman, Executive Director, Manager of WNO Individual Giving, and Senior Manager of WNO Development in arranging all details associated with all Board of Trustees meetings (four per year), Executive Committee meetings (four per year) and other committee meetings, including:

  • Generating written and verbal reports for committee chairs;

  • Researching, preparing, organizing, and designing meeting materials with various department heads; and

  • Communicating event logistics with Board members and senior staff.

10%   Assist the Board Chairman, Nominating and Governance Committee, Manager of WNO Individual Giving, and Senior Manager of WNO Development in researching and identifying prospective new Board members, including:

  • Preparing individually tailored research briefings, solicitations, proposals, and presentations;

  • Creating and editing all types of correspondence of varying length and complexity;

  • Accurately tracking progress and completion of action items from initial discovery through acquisition.

20%   With WNO Development Staff and WNO Ball Chairman, prepare invitation lists, coordinate and draft solicitations and acknowledgement letters for the WNO Opera Ball ($1M goal), WNO's annual fundraising event.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s required, advanced degree in a related field preferred.
  • Two to three years development or related experience required.
  • Working knowledge of the performing arts is preferred.

Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required

  • Superior organizational, written, and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Careful attention to detail and awareness of standard accounting procedures.
  • Ability and confidence to work without close supervision, to foresee development needs, and to proactively generate work for this position as well as an Assistant and an intern.
  • Ability to foresee development needs and to proactively generate work for this position and for others supportive of this position.
  • Ability to delegate and multitask.
  • A professional and cordial demeanor, tact, and diplomacy are imperative as the incumbent is regularly in contact with people at all levels of society and business including Kennedy Center leadership, high level volunteers, major donors and prospects, and other Center personnel.
  • A clear understanding of the Kennedy Center mission, and an understanding of the ways in which a fundraising operation works within a large and complex institution.
  • Creativity and an excellent command of the English language are critical to identifying funding sources, matching their interests to projects, and communicating persuasively, both in person and in writing, the need for funding.
  • Ability to deftly manage many relationships and personality types; both internally among staff members, and externally among constituents.
  • Experience with Tessitura is ideal.
