With teams in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Dallas and New York City, we create personalized storytelling experiences through environmental design and build outs for brands such as Nike, Activision, Beats by Dre, Bear Naked, Kashi, Morningstar Farms, Google, and Genentech.


Your mission
The Design Director is responsible for specialty oversight of all graphic design and 2D creative elements for pitches/proposals and project activations/events within OBE. In partnership with the Strategy, Creative, Digital, Account and Production teams, you will guide the Design team through the creative process, taking initial concepts and turning them into a compelling visual story. Your leadership will elevate the creative output of the studio, resulting in award-winning, killer work. 

Key accountabilities

Creative leadership
- Get your hands dirty by producing and guiding fantastic work that solves our clients’ business challenges in unique and innovative ways
- Create and/or manage the layout design for all 2D creative elements included in RFPs and client projects and activations
- Participate in brainstorming sessions and workshops designed toward specific outputs and solutions that address client’s strategy and tactical business needs
- Interface with internal teams and clients for creative sell-in and review
- Collaborate with Account and Production leads to ensure all client deliverables are being met on a timely basis with consistency and high quality; has the proven ability to partner on operationalizing concepts within budget while meeting timelines
- Manage print production process, including but not limited to vendor selection and management, press checks and substrate selection
- Coordinate with outside resources, including vendors, photographers, printers, fabricators, freelancers, and/or web and interactive contractors, to complete creative materials for each account, as needed
- Contribute leadership in terms of best practices and standard processes to drive the design team’s capabilities forward

People management
- Act as studio manager coordinating and managing a number of individuals internally and/or externally
- Ensure the proper design team is in place to manage varying degrees of workflow, working with the Creative Director and Creative Services Coordinator to acquire local freelance resources and ensure freelance staffing falls within program budget
- Train and supervise in house design staff in the execution of creative efforts to ensure they are consistent with agreed upon strategy, within budget and on schedule
- Mentor design staff, providing regular educational opportunities, constructive critique and thoughtful guidance along their growth path
- Encourage curiosity, strive to continually increase the creative skill level of the department

Knowledge and experience
- A solid portfolio of 8+ years that demonstrates successful and relevant experiential/environmental/field marketing and experience design at an agency and/or in-house
- Effective communicator and storyteller with the ability to find the best approach to verbally and visually communicate an idea AND articulately present it to other team members, clients and agency partners
- Demonstrated experience in leading the visual interpretation of new business and client review decks through various communication vehicles
- Excellent listener, able to get to the heart of what the client and/or team is telling you
- Experience collaborating with teams of strategists, creatives, designers, producers, account managers and content developers
- Ability to generate and present thought leadership on behalf of the agency, bringing cutting-edge design knowledge that drives innovative client work
- Adept at multi-tasking while coordinating multiple projects and resources
- Visually acute point of view demonstrated in all design assignments

Education and skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, design, marketing, or communications
- Deep technical understanding of and capability with the latest Adobe Suite of programs, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
- Fluid capability with Mac suite of programs including Keynote and Microsoft Office
- Digital/interactive capabilities (HTML 5/CSS 3/PHP) a plus
- Familiarity with 3D design and/or motion graphics software, such as Cinema 4D and After Effects are also pluses
