Position Overview:

As Vice President of Marketing and Communications, you will be integral to the execution of our ambitious goals. You will bring compelling, innovative ideas to promote our work and attract sponsors, customers, partners, and top talent. You will drive the narrative internally and externally.

This position reports to the President and CEO and will include leading marketing, product sales, and communications. You will be responsible for creating a strong Aurora brand and presence across relevant marketing channels, planning and executing marketing campaigns for key programs and company initiatives, defining a market and cultivating customers for Aurora’s products, developing successful internal communications strategies and messaging, and developing processes and operations that allow your team to succeed. This strategic marketing leader will coach and develop, share market trends and forecasts, analyze Aurora’s competitive market landscape, and serve as a thought leader as they ensure that Aurora’s visibility grows.

Specific Responsibilities:

– Marketing –

  • Build the brand:  You will work with your team and Aurora executives to formalize an Aurora brand that is tied to our current work and our long range strategic plan. You’ll build a brand guide and communicate it internally to the Aurora team, as well as ensure that it’s used to consistently guide our external marketing and communications.
  • Develop and execute marketing strategies: Create and lead creative and innovative marketing campaigns that best promote our brand and capabilities in order to generate new partnerships, sales, opportunities, and world class hires.
  • Create content: Aurora turns ideas into reality. We need to bring this engineering spirit to our marketing and communications efforts. In this new role, you’ll build and lead a team of content creators that will work with executives, management, and engineers to create captivating media assets – photos, videos, animations, flight test live streams, and other types – that will be leveraged in marketing channels as well as customer meetings, internal communications, and other forums. To support this goal, you’ll have unlimited access to some of the world’s most innovative and interesting autonomous flight vehicles, as well as the diverse team that created them.

Communications –

  • Create effective messaging and talking points: Develop effective messaging and talking points to strategically position Aurora products and initiatives in a competitive landscape.  Internally provide talking points to our employees to help them effectively interact with recruits, sponsors, partners, and customers.
  • Build media relationships: Build relationships with strategic media outlets to effectively disseminate information and increase visibility of Aurora activities.
  • Develop internal communication strategies: Develop effective internal communication methods to keep our work force informed and allow them to effectively interface with sponsors, customers, partners, and potential recruits.

– Product sales –

  • Understand the market and competition: Develop a deep understanding of market and competitor landscape to strategically position Aurora’s products. Cultivate connections that result in qualified leads.
  • Develop effective product sales strategies: Aurora has some of the world’s most innovative aerospace products and services, with significantly more on the way. In your new role, you’ll work with product managers to develop sales strategies and support those strategies with effective marketing and sales campaigns.
  • Build and lead a world-class sales team: In your new role, you’ll work with existing Aurora personnel as well as a team that you build in order to execute your sales and marketing strategy for Aurora products and services.

– Operations –

  • Lead aggressively – be out in front: In this new role, you’ll be out in front of product and programs teams, creating strategies and executing marketing and communications plans that contribute to their goals. You’ll work closely with some of the world’s best engineers to understand their technology and their teams. You’ll recognize the strategic goals of both the company and programs in order to stay out in front of our rapidly moving business. You’ll build a marketing, sales, and communications approach that’s as innovative, aggressive, and fast-paced as our engineering teams.
  • Lead a marketing, product sales, and communications team: Mentor and develop a team of driven professionals in various areas of specialty; provide substantive technical advice and knowledge to support the development of team members.
  • Lead with data: As Aurora grows, it’s more important than ever to develop and track key performance metrics. You’ll ensure the integrity of data used to lead the organization. Provide leadership and consulting support to the management team on matters of goal setting, metric development, and strategic planning.
  • Work across teams: the VP of Marketing and Communications will play a central role in hiring, product sales, as well as internal and external operations. In this role, you’ll work with the VP Human Resources, company COO, business unit leaders, and managers across the entire enterprise to contribute to the Aurora mission.

  • Confident and decisive, possessing a strategic focus as well as an operational and detail-oriented perspective.
  • Strong communication skills; able to relate to people at all levels of the organization.
  • Able to multitask and execute effectively on a wide variety of tasks and initiatives simultaneously.

Desired skills and background:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Marketing or related field preferred; Master’s preferred.
  • 15+ years of marketing and communications experience with demonstrated competence in several functional areas.
  • Prior experience leading a marketing, sales, and communications organization through a multiyear period of rapid growth (i.e. 40%+ a year).
  • Prior VP level experience with a company with annual revenues in excess of $350 million and more than 1,000 employees.
  • Proven experience successfully leading and directing a team of marketing and communications professionals.
  • Ability to understand, consolidate, and restate cutting-edge technical concepts in compelling ways.
  • Experience designing and implementing marketing campaigns for innovative technical programs.
